Fifteen minutes with Deb Curlis

Ada Area Chamber of Commerce director

Deb Curlis will step down from her position as the director of the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce at the end of February 2022. The Icon asked her for fifteen minutes to review her work with the chamber.

Were you a chamber member before you became director?

I was the chamber representative for Community Health Professionals. When I first came to Ada to work, Matt Brown was the chamber president. He got me involved as a board member. Shortly after that, he took a job in Bellefontaine and I took over as president to finish out his term. I was re-elected and served five years as president.

How long have you been chamber director?

Three years ago the Ada chamber decided to add a director’s position. I was elected to the director’s position at that point. Between the two roles I have served eight years. This year would be the ninth. My last day as director will be February 28, 2022. I will remain on the board.

What is your favorite responsibility or duty as director?

One of my favorite duties is talking with the other business owners. Getting to know about their business.  But I love all the preparations for the Harvest and Herb Festival, too.

Least favorite?

There isn't anything I don't like to do for the chamber. The only negative would be when I get complaints that have nothing to do with our chamber.

Biggest accomplishment?

I am proud that our small village chamber reached 107 members in 2021. I was able to get us connected to the SOCA Insurance program. When a business joins our chamber, it allows them to connect with SOCA and receive discounts on employee health insurance. We have gained outside members for that reason.

Are there any surprises that come with chamber memberships? Misconceptions or pleasant surprises?

When a new business opens in Ada, they receive a ribbon cutting event along with a new broom. The broom is given to sweep in their new customers. They also receive a free membership for the rest of the year. I once was told by a new business that they didn't want the free membership because they thought they would have to keep joining. That, of course, is not true. No one is ever required to renew.

We have a great community and I enjoy living and working in Ada. I will continue to promote and shop Ada businesses!

Curlis will continue to work as director of Beatitudes community center at 210 N Main St.
