ONU freshman Jacob Reed wins 141 pound title at 40th annual tourney

Freshman Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) won the 141 pound title to lead the Ohio Northern wrestling team to a second place finish at the 40th annual ONU Invitational tournament on Saturday, November 4, at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears finished second of 16 teams with 144 points and had 10 wrestlers place in the top eight in their respective weight classes. Olivet (Mich.) won the team title with 160.5 points, Adrian (Mich.) was third with 142.5 points and Otterbein was fourth with 122 points.

Top-seeded Reed got a takedown with 16 seconds left to defeat second-seeded Reese Willis of Olivet in the championship match to complete a 5-0 day and improve to a team-best 17-1 on the season.

Senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) went 4-1 and reached the championship bout at 165 before finishing second.

Second-seeded Schuyler Caprella (Bluffton/Allen East) placed third at 157 pounds with a 4-1 record.

Second-seeded freshman Dylan Le (Powell/Dublin Scioto) placed fourth at 133 pounds with a 3-2 record and third-seeded freshman Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta) was fourth at 125 with a 4-2 mark.

Sixth-seeded freshman Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) was sixth at 184 pounds, posting a 5-2 record.

Junior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) was sixth at Heavyweight with a 4-1 record as the No. 6 seed.

Freshman Brandon Lee (La Plata, Md.) was seventh at 141 pounds with a 4-2 mark and freshman Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview) was seventh at 157 with a 3-2 record.

Sixth-seeded sophomore Matt Dewitz (Oak Harbor) placed eighth at 149 pounds with a 2-1 mark.

The Polar Bears will return to action on Dec. 22 at the Wilkes (Pa.) Open.
