Bearcats claw Ada

By Cort Reynolds

Visiting Ada fell behind big and early to Spencerville and lost 56-20 in a Northwest Conference contest Friday night.

The Bearcats tallied three touchdowns in the first five minutes and raced to a 28-0 lead after the initial period of play. The hosts extended the margin to 49-6 at halftime.

Ada scored the last two touchdowns in the fourth period.

The Bulldogs fell to 1-6 and 0-4 in the NWC after their fourth straight defeat.

Spencerville improved to 3-4 and 2-2 in league play with the win.

"We fought hard, we competed hard," said first-year Ada head coach Toby Smith. "We are just making too many mistakes to give ourselves a chance to win.

"We are a very young football team," he continued. "The experience we get from playing is very important and will make us better down the road. Every repetition is valuable. This is a two or three-year fix."

Bearcat Dale Smith scored the first touchdown on a 52-yard run a mere 10 seconds into the contest.

Just 88 seconds later, Bearcat quarterback Nate Coulter completed a 33-yard TD pass to Tyler Koenig.

Coulter then tallied a three-yard scoring run with 7:16 still left in the opening stanza. Emerson Layman's third point after kick gave the Bearcats a 21-0 lead.

Running back Gunner Grigsby extended the margin to 28-0 on a nine-yard jaunt with 5:07 to go in the opening stanza.

Ada got on the scoreboard when freshman quarterback Levi Green found paydirt on a one-yard run. Max Puerto's PAT kick missed to keep the margin at 28-6 with 10:32 left in the half.

Smith then returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to paydirt to build the cushion to 35-6.

Koenig added a two-yard TD run with 4:02 left in the second period.

Coulter scored on a 21-yard run with just 23 ticks remaining in the first half to balloon the margin to 49-6 at intermission.

Bearcat Brayden Bowers found the end zone on a 12-yard run with 6:36 left in the third quarter to advance the lead to 56-6.

The purple and gold defense was able to hold Spencerville scoreless over the last 18:36.

Bulldog back Jalee Bolden tallied on a one-yard plunge with 9:53 remaining. Puerto's extra point kick was good to make it 56-13.

Green then tallied his second TD on a five-yard run with just 70 seconds remaining. Puerto's second PAT provided the final score.

"We are in position to make plays but don't, mostly because of our inexperience," said Smith. "But we are getting valuable experience.

"We have to mentally lock in more and focus to cover our inadequacies. Right now it is not happening at a high enough rate."

He noted that Ada has played a tough schedule against seven teams with a 29-20 combined record thus far. It gets harder as undefeated Columbus Grove comes to War MEmorial Stadium in week eight.

"We don't have anyone on our schedule who is like us, in our position (rebuilding)," Smith added. "Going into tonight none of our opponents were under .500. But we will keep plugging."
