Ada youth learn about park rangers

By Monty Siekerman
Richard Kimmel helps one and a half year old Brody Hopson reach a water fountain at Ada War Memorial Park. Kimmel is the chief park ranger for the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District in Lima.

He was on hand at a free lunch, sponsored by ReStore Community Center, to talk with children about the duties of a park ranger and describe some of the different kinds of parks in the Lima area.

There are rivers, monuments, historical parks, and a bird sanctuary, among others.
The park district sponsors an apple festival, making maple sugar, environmental programs, and more.

2016 Red Cross Learn To Swim Program is completed for this summer.  62 students participated in the 10 hot days of lessons!  We had great weather this year.

I would like to thank the Village of Ada for the facility to hold the lessons.  The water was wonderful, the pool area was always clean and ready for our use and the lifeguards were very attentive to the swimmers.  The pool staff had the facility open and ready for the volunteers and swimmers every morning.

Ada child drowns in pond

A 5-year-old Ada child drowned in a pond on Sunday, July 31, according to Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish.

Crish reported that Haiven Hale, 5, of Ada, was swimming with other children in a pond at 6803 N. Dixie Highway in Allen County, when he was found unresponsive in the water.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene but were unable to save him, Crish said.

The sheriff’s report indicated that there were several adults around the pond watching the children and trying to keep track of them in the water, but with children going in and out, lost track for a minute or two, long enough for Haiven to drown.
