Ada hosts Bluffton and Ft. Jennings in a triangular meet Tuesday, April 27 at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs then compete at the USV Invitational Thursday, April 29.

Ada net squad whips Celina
CELINA - The Ada tennis team journeyed to Celina Saturday and won by a convincing 4-1 count to finish a busy week successfully.

The Bulldog netters improved to 5-6 with the victory, while Celina fell to 1-7 with the defeat.

"It was a good week for Ada with three wins in four matches," said Ada head coach Dexter Woods. All four matches were on the road.

Ada senior Miranda Wills improved to 7-4 this season at first singles by rolling to a straight-sets win over her senior opponent.

"Miranda continued to play well against quality competition offered by each team's number one player," said Woods. "She stayed strong throughout the match against an opponent who did not give up, including during a final game of the match that went to more deuces over 15 or so minutes than Miranda remembers having played before in a single game."

Bulldog junior southpaw Dexter Woods III came back from a slow start to win handily at number two singles and improve his record to 9-2 this spring.

"Dexter did a great job maintaining his composure after being down 3-4 in the first set because of his own errant shots and his opponent's consistent shotmaking," said coach Woods. "He adjusted his play and strategy a bit, and went on to win nine consecutive games (to close out the match)."

Ada junior Brendan Jameson won a fourth consecutive match at third singles by whipping his freshman foe.

"Brendan combined forceful groundstrokes and focused concentration for the entire match to win handily," said Woods.

Seniors Cole Anspaugh and Colton Biederman pulled out a tough three-setter at first doubles over a Celina junior duo to earn their first win together.

"Cole and Colton did well to navigate the ups and downs of points, games, sets, and the match," Woods noted. "They steadfastly overcame their second-set loss by not over-compensating by over-hitting, and by continuing to play within their style of simply getting the ball back across the net and then taking over at the net."

At second doubles, the Ada sophomore tandem of Amelia Alexander and Geddes Klingler lost a close match to an experienced junior/senior team in a second-set tiebreaker.

"Amelia and Geddes kept coming back from being down in the most exciting match of the day," Woods recounted. "After losing the first set, they came back from second-set deficits of 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6 to force a tiebreaker.

"They then rallied from a 2-4 deficit in the seven-point tiebreaker to take the breaker into extra points before bowing out 6-8 on a very good last shot by Celina.

"The match featured numerous scintillating attacks and retrievals, making for many very hard-earned points for both teams," Woods added.

Bulldogs Connor Daugherty and Brendan Kah also competed in three shortened JV doubles matches, winning twice.

"Brendan Kah and Connor Daugherty continued to develop their skills by playing a series of games versus three separate doubles teams from the large Celina team," said Woods.

"After a slow start against Rylan Chapman and Maddie Fleck (1-4), Brendan and Connor defeated Caitlyn Cramer and Jace Jackson (4-2), then beat Sara Tester and Brady Supp (3-2)."

Individual match results:
1st singles: Miranda Wills (Ada) defeated Logan Goettemoelller (C) 6-1, 6-1
2nd singles: Dexter Woods (Ada) def. Nick Forlow (C) 6-4, 6-0
3rd singles: Brendan Jameson (Ada) def. Keaton Fishbaugh (C) 6-2, 6-0

1st doubles: Cole Anspaugh/Colton Biederman (Ada) def. Diego Castorena/R.J. Veit (C) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2
2nd doubles: Maggie Zhang/Brenden Faller (C) 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) def. Amelia Alexander/Geddes Klingler (Ada)

The Bulldogs seek their first home victory when they host local rival Bluffton (2-5) Monday, April 26 at 5 p.m. The Pirates lost 3-2 to Archbold Friday evening.

The Bulldogs are 3-3 on the road this season, 2-0 at neutral sites (Westwood) and 0-3 at home.

Lady Bulldogs blanked at Minster
MINSTER - Visiting Ada was shut out 7-0 at state-ranked Minster in non-conference softball action Friday evening.

The Lady Bulldog record dropped to 8-7 with the defeat, their third in a row. The seventh-ranked Wildcat girls improved to 13-3 with the victory.

"We haven't been hitting well lately and the defense was shaky," said Ada head coach Rebecca Dicke. "We did put the ball in play better and only struck out four times."

Bulldog pitcher Leona Dalton pitched all six innings, allowing seven hits. She struck out 10, walked none and permitted four earned runs.

Senior Tori Green singled twice for Ada, including a leadoff hit in the first frame. Senior Alexis Waugh singled and Dalton walked, but a caught stealing and two strikeouts stymied what ended up being the best Bulldog threat.

Minster plated three runs in the home first on an Emma Goubeaux triple, two singles and a pair of Bulldog errors.

Freshman Daicy Robinson spanked a second inning single, but the Bulldogs only managed one more hit - a Green single in the fifth - the rest of the game.

Minster again scored three runs in the second inning on a Hannah Oldiges triple, a single and an Ada error to build a 6-0 cushion.

The Wildcats added the final run on a third inning solo homer off the bat of Lexi Bishop. Dalton was able to hold Minster without a run over the last three innings despite a triple by Lyndi Hemmelgarn in the fourth inning.

The Bulldogs were out-hit by the hosts, 7-4. Mikaela Hoskins hurled a four-hitter to earn the win.

"Minster is a great team, they are really solid defensively and they hit the ball hard," summed up Dicke.

The Bulldog girls (1-3 NWC) host league-leading Crestview (14-4, 5-0 NWC) Monday, April 26. "It is a conference game and we need to come out ready to play, improve our hitting and score some runs," said Dicke.

They then play at Fostoria Tuesday in a non-league game before traveling to face third-place league foe Paulding (13-2, 3-1 NWC) Thursday.

Ada hosts powerful BVC leader Van Buren (14-2, 5-0 BVC) Friday, then entertains county rival Kenton (3-9) Saturday at noon to finish a difficult, busy week.

Ada will also make up the postponed season-opening doubleheader at home vs. non-conference foe Perry (1-8) on Saturday, May 8.
