Ruby Holbrook was retired from Upper Scioto Valley as a cook

Ruby J. Holbrook, 85, passed away on Friday, Feb. 5, 2021 at 8:02 a.m. at Vancrest of Ada.

She was born on June 24, 1935, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to Rev. Seward and Mary (Hurt) Dyer who preceded her in death. On March 15, 1952, Ruby married Rev. James Holbrook and he preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 2010.

Ruby retired in 1986 from Upper Scioto Valley Schools where she had worked as a cook. She was a member of several churches including Quickstep Pentecostal Church of God, Alger; God’s Light House, Tiffin; and Wapakoneta Community Worship Center. Ruby’s lifelong ministry was through her music, she taught playing guitar and singing. She ministered through song at many church services and funerals.   

She is survived by two sons: Pastor Donald (Ruth) Holbrook of Alger and Pastor Daniel (Peggy) Holbrook of Ada; a daughter, Deidre Holbrook (Victor) Phillips of Lima; 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; a brother, Frank Dyer of Alger; and two sisters: Ruth Dye (Ron) Nichols of Dola and Rosemary (Daniel) Miller of Alger.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dale Holbrook; a daughter, Diana J. Holbrook; three brothers: Chalmer Dyer, Mort Dyer and Ray Dyer; and two sisters: Ressie Robirds and Lucy Rowe.

Attendance will be restricted at the funeral and visitation based on space to accommodate social distancing requirements.  Face coverings must be worn while attending visitation and service.   

Private family services will be held at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Ada.  Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Ada.
