Ohio Northern University winter sports teams had a winning weekend. Here are summaries of those team's events.
WRESTLING
ADA — The Ohio Northern wresting team wrapped up its abbreviated 2021 season with a 30-13 victory over Otterbein on Sunday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center Fieldhouse.
The Polar Bears finish with a 3-1 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Cardinals end their season 1-3, 1-3.
Ohio Northern also celebrated Senior Day on Sunday and honored its graduating senior Rhett Roeder(Monroeville).
ONU won six of the 10 varsity bouts against OU, four of which were by fall.
Freshman Devon Harbison (Beloit, Wis./Turner) and sophomore Camden Spears (Plainfield, Ind.) each won by fall at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively, to get Northern off to a 12-0 lead.
No. 7-ranked sophomore Chase Sumner (Ada) put the Polar Bears on top 18-3 with a pin at 149 pounds just 46 seconds into his match at 149 pounds.
Junior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) and junior Dylan Knotts (Russells Point/Indian Lake) each won by decision and ONU led 24-6 after the 174-pound weight class.
Sophomore Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) wrapped up the dual with a pin in 1:49 at heavyweight.
ONU also wrestled 20 exhibition matches against Otterbein and Wilmington wrestlers during the afternoon.
Otterbein also defeated Wilmington 39-9 as part of the tri-meet.
Roeder finished the day with a 2-0 record with a pin and a decision. He his four-year career with 24 victories and 14 pins.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLIANCE — Senior Owen Lloyd (Colfax, Ind./Clinton Prairie) and junior Andrew Buderer (Oak Harbor) won events to lead the No. 7-ranked Ohio Northern men's track and field team to a second place finish at the Mount Union Wuske Invitational on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (7-2 overall) finished second with 168 points. Mount Union won the invitational with 184 points, No. 3-ranked John Carroll finished third with 133 points and Heidelberg finished fourth with 78 points.
Senior Owen Lloyd (Colfax, Ind./Clinton Prairie) won the 60 meter hurdles in 8.60 seconds.
Junior Andrew Buderer (Oak Harbor) won the pole vault with a height of 4.66 meters.
Distance medley relay team of Sophomore Breydan Hann (Wooster), sophomore Brooks Blakeley (Versailles), junior Patrick Baker (Massillon/Jackson), and sophomore Billy Driemeyer (House Springs, Mo./Lindbergh) won in 11:03.63.
Senior Travis Sutter (Sharpsburg/Fort Recovery) finished second in the 3,000 crossing the line in 9:07.15.
Senior Colin McCullough (Galion) finished second in the long jump with a leap of 6.28 meters.
Junior Nate Dean (Euclid/Villa Angela-Saint Joseph) finished in second in 50.78 seconds.
Baker finished second in the 1,000 in 2:39.58.
Freshman Keegan Digby (Bowling Green/Otsego) finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14.40 meters.
The Polar Bears will return to action next sunday as a split squad at the Capital sprints/jumps meet, and the Otterbein distance/throws meet.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLIANCE — Senior Kylie Vestal (Youngstown/Austintown Fitch) won the 1,000-meter run to lead the No. 7-ranked Ohio Northern women's track and field team to a third place finish at the Mount Union Wuske Invitational Saturday.
The Polar Bears (5-4 overall) finished in third with 94.5 points. Mount Union won the invitational with 186.5 points, No. 2 John Carroll finished second with 163 points and Heidelberg finished fourth with 74 points.
Vestal won the 1,000 in 3:09.08.
Senior Stella DeWitt (Weston/Cardinal Stritch) finished second in 60 meters hurdles in 9.21 seconds.
Junior Megan Wright (Eaton/Twin Valley South) finished third in 3,000 in 10:47.09.
Sophomore Anna Schatzle (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) and freshman Olivia Ogg (Hebron/Lakewood) finished third and fourth in pole vault with vaults of 3.11 meters, and 2.96 meters respectively.
Freshman Julianna Herron (Miamisburg) finished third in 500 in 1:23.34.
Junior Kayla Silva (Westerville/South)finished fourth in the 60 meters in 8.04 seconds.
Freshman Emily Tackett (Deshler/Patrick Henry) finished fourth in the weight throw with a throw of 12.92 meters.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Sunday as a split squad at the Capital Sprints/Jumps Meet, and the Otterbein Distance/Throws Meet.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ADA — The Ohio Northern men's swimming & diving team won 10 of 13 events to post a 153-67 victory over Baldwin Wallace on Senior Day at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears stay in first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season standings with a 2-0 record, overall and 2-0 in the OAC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-2, 0-2.
Freshman Ben Lacey (Lebanon) won the 200 free in 1:47.31 and the 200 fly in 1:59.48 to lead ONU.
Senior Patrick Reed (Charleston, W.Va./Washington) won the 200 breast in 2:14.73.
Junior Jeremy Adams (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) won the 200 I.M. in 2:01.05 and junior Justin DeLano(Englewood/Northmont) won the 200 back in 2:00.13.
Sophomore Calob Cope (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) won the 500 free in 4:55.57.
Freshman Patrick Wellman (Dublin/Jerome) won the 1,000-yard free in 10:26.52 and freshman Evan Sailor(Goshen, Ind.) won the 3-meter diving unopposed with 204.35 points.
Northern opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay. Freshman Mason Meyer (Hudson), Adams, junior Jackson Stanley (Beavercreek) and sophomore Mike Lewandowski (Shelby Township, Mich./Eisenhower) won in 1:39.35.
Adams, DeLano, Jackson and Lacey wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 free relay in 3:15.76.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Feb. 19 with a dual meet at Mount Union.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ADA — The Ohio Northern women's swimming & diving team remained undefeated on the season with a 142-87 victory over Baldwin Wallace on Senior Day at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (2-0 overall, 2-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) stayed atop the OAC standings by winning eight of the 13 events on the day.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 0-2, 0-2.
The highlight of the day for ONU came when sophomore Abby Schauer (Beavercreek) rallied from two seconds behind with 50 yards to go to win the 200 breast by .01 of a second in 2:41.16. She also won the 200 I.M. in 2:22.96.
Junior Megan Lubinski (Loveland/Brighton) won the 50 free in :25.24 and the 100 free in :55.23.
rFeshman Sofia Vazquez (Fulshear, Tex./Tompkins) swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events. She defeated three other divers to win the 1-meter diving with 184.85 points and took the 3-meter diving unopposed with 192.50 points.
Senior Marissa Taylor (Granite Falls, N./C./South Caldwell) won the 200 fly in 2:24.99.
Freshman Katie Bend (Carmel, Ind.) won the 500 free in 5:38.19.
Northern opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Shelby Starkey (Bellefontaine), sophomore Maddy Markwood (Anchor Bay, Mich.), junior Lauren Shaw (Port Clinton) and freshman Gabbie Grant (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) touched in 1:58.15.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Feb. 19 with a dual meet at Mount Union.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
ADA — Sophomore Grant Heileman (Millersport/Sheridan) had a career-high 15 points and sophomore C.J. Napier (Miamisburg/Bishop Fenwick) had his third consecutive double-double to lead Ohio Northern in a 64-59 Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball loss to Heidelberg on Saturday at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears fall to 2-3 overall and are 2-3 in the OAC, while the Student Princes remain undefeated at 5-0, 5-0.
Heileman's 15 points marks the second consecutive game he scored in double figures after an 11-point performance on Friday night at Heidelberg.
Napier had 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, junior Brandon Waugh (Columbus/Northland) added 12 points and sophomore Daniel Unruh (Elida) scored 10 points for Ohio Northern.
Heidelberg was led by Dylan Woods with a game-high 26 points.
The score was tied at 50-all with nine minutes left when HU went on a 5-0 run to take the lead for good.
Woods made a free throw with 1:31 remaining to give the Student Princes a 60-57 lead and Napier answered with a pair of free throws at the 34 second mark to make it 60-59.
Heidelberg beat the press and got a layup with 25.2 seconds left to go back up 62-59.
After a timeout, Northern had a chance to tie, but the HU defence forced the final of 17 Polar Bear turnovers with 3.6 ticks left.
Woods made a pair of free throws to ice the game.
"We had too many turnovers," ONU head coach Rich Bensman said. "We had 17 turnovers that led to 25 points and that is just too many. We did a great job on the boards, though, limiting them to just five offensive boards. We had chances late, but didn't execute down the stretch. We had many good things to build on, but just too many mistakes to beat a good team."
Northern finished the game 22-of-54 from the floor for 40.7 percent and were 6-of-18 from 3-point range for 33.3 percent. Heidelberg made 22-of-49 field goal attempts for 44.9 percent and hit 4-of-14 threes for 28.6 percent.
ONU won the rebounding battle 34-25, including a 12-5 advantage on the offensive end.
The Polar Bears will return to action next weekend with a home-and-home against John Carroll with a home game on Friday and a road tilt in University Heights on Saturday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Junior Alissa Stahler (Lima/Shawnee) scored a career-high 19 points to fuel the Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 87-59 victory against Heidelberg Saturday night at Seiberling Gymnasium.
ONU completed the two-game sweep of Heidelberg and improve to (3-3 overall, 3-3 OAC) and the Student Princes fall to (1-5, 1-5).
Stahler shot 100 percent (7-of-7) from the field with 19 points and 4 rebounds.
Senior Emily Brock (Akron/Revere) scored 11 points and sophomore Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored 10 points as the other Polar Bears with double figure scoring totals.
Leading 40-27 at halftime, the Polar Bears started the second half with a 13-4 run to grab a commanding 53-31 lead with 5:57 to go in the third quarter.
Junior Kate Iliff (Lorain/Steele) drilled a 3-pointer to cap an 11-0 run and give ONU its biggest lead at 83-50 with 3:36 remaining.
The Polar Bears shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the field, while Heidelberg was 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field.
Ohio Northern scored 48 bench points led by Stahler's 19-point effort. ONU also had 42 points in the paint while Heidelberg had 18.
The Polar Bears controlled the turnover battle with nine turnovers, while forcing Heidelberg into 18.
HU won the rebounding battle 40-36.
Ohio Northern will return to action next Friday and Saturday with a home-and-home series with John Carroll starting on the road Friday Night.
