Men and women's basketball teams victors

With the game tied and two seconds to play, senior Abby Weeks (West Chester/Mount Notre Dame) split a pair of free throws to lift the Ohio Northern women's basketball team over No. 20-ranked John Carroll, 59-58, inside the Decarlo Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (17-6 overall, 11-5 Ohio Athletic Conference) completed its regular-season sweep of the Blue Streaks (19-4 overall, 13-3 OAC).

Northern was led by senior Emily Mescher (Maria Stein/Marion Local) posted her sixth career double-double, pouring in 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

In protecting nearly 10,000 troops throughout the Middle East

Lt. Col. Matt Crawford, an Ohio National Guardsman from Ada, plays an integral part in protecting approximately 10,000 troops supporting Task Force Spartan throughout the Middle East.

Crawford, the 38th Infantry Division's protection chief, oversees and coordinates protection measures from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive attacks, engineer survivability and personnel recovery efforts.

“The protection warfighting function is about economy of force and ensuring forces are available to the commander when needed, which is why we have our rapid reaction forces and quick reaction force,” said Crawford.

Ada has four regal residents thanks to a Valentine's Day event at Vancrest of Ada. Two men were named King of Hearts and two women were named Queen of Hearts in the Feb. 14 party. Assisted living resident Clyde Brown and Alice Bucher were crowned king and queen for the day. And, Long-term care residents Ralph Worrell and Emmy Fox were also crowned king and queen. Second time for Wills to receive this award

Ohio Northern seniors Mackenzie Wills (Ada HS grad) and Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) were named Co-Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Players of the Week for the week of Feb. 10-16.

Wills and Curry each went 6-0 as the Polar Bears (5-2 overall) won two of three matches in Nicholasville, Ky.

ONU began the weekend with a 5-4 loss to host Transylvania (Ky.) before sweeping LaGrange (Ga.) and Roanoke (Va.) 9-0.

The American Red Cross North Central Ohio Chapter responded to a fire on County Road 17, Forest, early Sunday morning.

The Red Cross provided assistance for the immediate needs of the family of four living in the home, such as temporary lodging, food and clothing.

“We’re deeply saddened for those who were impacted by this fire,” said Todd James, Executive Director, North Central Ohio Chapter.
