Emma Spradlin, a life-long resident of McGuffey, will celebrate her 102nd birthday on Thursday, Feb. 27, at Vancrest of Ada, with her family and friends. She lived in McGuffey since she was 7. She is mother to nine children.
One of her daughters, Dorothy Puckett of Kenton, provided the Icon with a poem that summarizes her life:
Myra McCurdy was among many Ada residents observing Ash Wednesday. The First United Methodist Chruch held a blessing and distribution of ashes in an "ashes to go" observance. Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of the season of Lent.
Senior Abby Weeks (West Chester/Mount Notre Dame) netted a career-high 18 points to lead the Ohio Northern women's basketball team on Tuesday evening.
The Polar Bears propelled themselves into the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals by defeating Mount Union 58-50 inside the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears (20-6 overall) will travel to University Heights to face No. 25-ranked John Carroll on Thursday at 7 p.m.
MTU (14-12 overall) cut the deficit to 54-50 with 53 seconds left. The Purple Raiders fouled 20 seconds later. Junior Sydney Ward (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and Weeks each drilled a pair of free throws to ice the game down the stretch.
Ethan Hull, senior at Ada High School, is the March Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative student of the month. The Icon had an opportunity to talk with him recently. Here is a portion of that interview.
Icon: What’s your class schedule this semester?
Ethan: I’m taking anatomy, economics, sociology, introduction to film and literature, I have a study hall, graphic design and Photoshop, statistics and I’m a ‘Dogs volunteer.
