ONU professor developing new technique to monitor phosphorus in watersheds

Christopher Spiese, Ohio Northern University assistant professor of chemistry, is working on the development of a new technique for measuring dissolved phosphorus in freshwaters that could introduce a new testing method that will allow for a more cost-efficient and quicker way to monitor watersheds.

Working with ONU student Joanne Berry, a junior biochemistry major from Brunswick, Ohio, Spiese reached a breakthrough in 2011 when a novel reagent (a substance that, because of the reactions it causes, is used in analysis and synthesis) formed a yellow-green fluorescent compound in the presence of phosphate.

The high temprature in December was 66 degrees on Dec. 3. The low was 14 degrees on Dec. 28. The average December 2012 temperature was 36.9 degrees. The normal average for December is 29.2 degrees.

The precipitation for December 2012 was 16 inches (combining both rain and snow inches). The normal average precipitation is 2.69 inches.  A little catching up from our dry November.

Seven Rhythm in Motion dancers perform in Outback Bowl pregame/halftime show

Seven area dancers from Rhythm In Motion Dance Centre of Ada participated in the 2013 Outback Bowl pregame and halftime shows on New Year’s Day, according to Darcey Schneider, studio owner.

Schneider told The Icon that she submitted an audition tape last January to Just For Kix, the organization in charge of the pregame and halftime shows, and secured a spot for the group of dancers when RIMDC made the cut and was invited to perform in this amazing opportunity.
