Village will purchase tornado siren
A tornado siren will be installed in Ada this spring. A video at the bottom of this story demonstrates the siren.
Michael Harnishfeger, police chief, update Ada’s council on the project on March 3.
The village allocated $35,000 in its budget for a siren. Federal Signal provided the village with a quote of $25,786 to provide and install a high power, directional rotating siren, which the village accepted.
Harnishfeger also contacted a second supplier, Sentry Sirens, and although is awaiting a written quote, anticipated it to be in excess of $43,000.
A coverage map shows the siren’s sound will go well past the village limits. It provides a 70-decibel signal and will be located near the Ada’s water towers.
Once installed the siren would only be activated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service. When activated it will run for 3 minutes in the event of a tornado warning.
It has options to allow Hardin County dispatch or Ada officials to remotely activate the siren.
The siren will be placed on a 50-foot pole approximately 45 to 47 feet above ground.
