Weekend Doctor: What's a "hospitalist?"

Often when patients are admitted to the hospital, they have questions such as, “Where is my family doctor?” or “What does a ‘hospitalist’ mean?” My common response to them is, “A hospitalist is serving like a family doctor for you while you are in the hospital.” Once the patient is discharged from the hospital, the family doctor usually resumes care. 

Hospitalists are like a quarterback on a football field or a conductor in an orchestra. Their job is to ensure both that patients feel well-educated about their medical illness and that they receive excellent care during one of the toughest times for them and for their loved ones.

August 10 Farmers & Merchants Picnic packs the park with fun

The 2024 Ada Farmers & Merchants Picnic is Saturday, August 10 at War Memorial Park. Started in 1913, this Ada tradition is sustained by volunteers and a non-profit organization. Funds raised in 2023 were used to improve the park by upgrading the three back ball diamonds with brick dust and sponsor the Pride of Ada Fireworks.

The following activities are highlighted on the Farmers & Merchants Picnic Facebook page, which also lists hourly and end of day prize drawings and vendors.

  • Greased Pigs - Register from 11:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Starts at 4:00 p.m. $5 Entry fee. At ball diamond #2
  • Basketball Tournament: Register from 11:00 a.m.-11:45 a.m. Starts at 12:00 $30 per team.  At basketball courts
  • Wack a Wreck: Get the chance to have some fun and wack-smash-wrech a beat up car.  Admission is $5 for 2 minutes of smashing.
  • Pony Rides -  3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. $5 per ride at Ball Diamond #1.
  • Truck & Tractor Pulls -  6:30 p.m. $10 entry fee. Seniors/Vets/Kids under 12 are free.
  • Main Prizes announced at 6:00 p.m.

AHS senior banner distribution on August 2

On Friday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m., banners of Ada High School seniors that were displayed on Main Street will be in a tub at the entrance of the Ada Alumni Soccer game at War Memorial Park.

Ohio Northern University has announced children’s auditions for the 2024 Holiday Spectacular musical extravaganza.

August 2024 calendar of events at Wings Support & Recovery

The August calendar for Wings Support & Recovery in Kenton includes making Lego flowers and mosaics.

The Kenton Branch at 111 E. Columbus has extended hours: Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

August 9 Party on the Ball Field

The 111th Annual Farmers and Merchants Picnic will kick off with a Party on the Ball Field on Friday, August 9. The evening includes: 6:00 p.m. Guitars 4 Vets Band "AWOL," 8:00-11:00 p.m. Shifferly Road Band, along with food trucks, dunk tank and a Veterans Wall. Admission is for 21 and older; $5 for a wrist band and $5 beers.
