Time to remove Household Hazardous Waste from your home
The North Central Ohio Waste Management District (NCOWM) office is now open to receive your household hazardous waste (HHW). The District's office, located on 215 Shawnee Road, Lima, offers household hazardous waste recycling to households only and electronic waste recycling to residents and businesses in Hardin and Allen Counties. By utilizing NCOWM district's services, you are keeping harmful items out of landfill.
What is household hazardous waste?
Paint, pesticides, batteries and paint products, such as thinners, solvents and stains, all contain chemicals that could be detrimental to your health - these (as well as many others) are therefore deemed as household hazardous waste (HHW). According to NCOWM, these items should not go in your normal trash.
What is electronic waste?
Broken or old electronics, such as old printers, stereo speakers, VCRs and cathode ray TVs are common examples of e-waste. According to Dennis Baker, former director of NCOWM, e-waste components contain lead, cadmium, mercury, and brominated flame retardants – compounds known to be hazardous to humans and to the environment. NCOWM district office in Lima accept e-waste.
NCOWM strongly advises you remove HHW from your house. The district charges $1 per pound of HHW and e-waste, but Joe Martin, project coordinator, stresses that the district is not making any money off this. "We try to take stuff that others won't take," Martin said.
