Kimberly Ann Badertscher was an athletic trainer

Kimberly Ann Badertscher, age 44, of Ada, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at 1:58 p.m. at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, surrounded by her family.

She was born on May 6, 1978 in Lima, Ohio to Dale L. and Sharon R. (Foust) Badertscher. Her father, Dale preceded her in death and her mother, Sharon survives in Ada.

Kimberly is survived by her sister, Michelle (Eric) Stinehelfer of Amherst. Her three nieces and nephew: Mallory, Caleb, Abigail, and Makenzie who were the light of her life.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Angela Badertscher.

Ada Schools: Weather slows buses after school, JH girls basketball is cancelled

Ada Exempted Village Schools announced at 2:40 p.m.: "Road Conditions have deteriorated throughout today, January 26, with new snow/ice accumulation and blowing/drifting snow.

"Ada EVS school buses may be running late as they use caution in transporting students home.

"Tonight's JH Girls Basketball game vs Arcadia is canceled.

"The JV/Varsity Girls Basketball game tonight vs Crestview is being played as scheduled."

January field reports from the Ohio Division of Wildlife

Freshwater jellyfish found in Putnam County pond

The following field reports from Ohio Division of Wildlife Officers were released on January 24:

Northwest Ohio – Wildlife District Two
While conducting sport fish enforcement on Lake Erie, State Wildlife Investigator Kelsey Brockman and State Wildlife Officer Nathan Robinson, assigned to Van Wert County, observed a Michigan charter boat fishing in Ohio waters. The boat did not have an Ohio guide sticker displayed, which is required for charters operating in Ohio. Further, the boat’s captain did not have an Ohio fishing guide license. He was charged for serving as a fishing guide in Ohio waters without a guide license. He was found guilty in court, paid a $200 fine, and was sentenced to 180 days in jail suspended pending no similar violations for one year.

State Wildlife Officer Jason Porinchok, assigned to Putnam County, received a picture from a local resident of an invertebrate found in a private pond. After some consultation and research, the invertebrate was found to be a freshwater jellyfish. Originating from China, these animals have found their way to Ohio via fish stockings, aquatic plants and waterfowl. They are not known to cause harm to humans or the environment and are not considered an invasive species.

Tapas

In Spain, tapa or tapas are small plates or small bites of food. Spaniards often eat their dinners later in the evening, so they will have tapas as small snacks to hold them over until food is served. Tapa would be similar to an appetizer in the United States.

There are three different types of tapas. The first is cocas de picar and is considered finger food to nibble such as nuts or olives. The second is pinchos, which requires utensils like a toothpick or skewer. Cazuelas is the third type of tapas served as a small dish of food in sauce.  

So, why am I discussing tapas? I will be providing some small bites of information published in recent medical journals about some healthy habits for 2023. Some of these tips might be a good solution if your resolutions are not going quite as planned.

Summary of January 24 Ada Council meeting

Planning commission hearing rescheduled; EMS annual report

At the January 24 meeting of the Ada Council, council president Jeff Oestrich conducted the meeting in the absence of Mayor Dave Retterer, who was unwell. Councilor Linda Mason was also absent. Council members present in addition to the president were Sean Beck, Sheila Coressel, Jason Campbell and Bob Simmons.

A Planning Commission meeting had been scheduled prior to the council meeting but did not have a quorum. This meeting, which will consider rezoning property owned by Wilson Sporting Goods, has been rescheduled for 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 7. 

The council approved four claims registers, which are attached within the council packet.

Amanda Markley taught 5th grade at Bluffton Elementary School

Amanda Jane (Rayl) Markley, age 43, of Lima, left this life at 1:58 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at her home with the love of her family by her side.

She was born October 7, 1979, in Lima to Charles D. Rayl and Jane Laura (Staley) Rayl. Her mother survives in Lafayette and her father and stepmother, Janice Rayl survive in Lima. On June 18, 2005, she married her longtime friend, Aaron G. Markley who also survives.
