IRS seeks volunteers for free tax prep programs in Ohio

Recruitment is underway throughout Ohio for volunteers and partner organizations for the Internal Revenue Service’s free tax preparation programs.  Volunteers must receive training and achieve certification over the next two months to be ready for the start of the 2013 tax filing season.

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free tax help to seniors as well as to low-to-moderate income and disabled individuals.  Partner organizations set up free tax preparation sites in local communities, where volunteers meet with and assist qualifying taxpayers.

Brandon Huber wins NFL/College contest week 2

Brandon Huber is the winner of the Icon Week 2 College NLF football contest, according to Corey Greer, contest judge.

Huber, Duane Bollenbacher and John Clevidence all picked 11 games correctly.  Bollenbacher was eliminated in Tie-Breaker 1 by picking Northwestern to lose 1-3 while the other two correctly picked Northwestern to lose 4-10.  In Tie-Breaker 2 Clevidence picked Cincinnati to lose by 11 or more while Huber picked the Bengals to win by 1-3 (closer to the actual win of 18 points).

St. Mark Lutheran hosts community supper on Nov. 28.

On Nov. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., St. Mark Lutheran Church will host a community supper for all who desire a meal.

We plan to do continue this ministry on the last Wednesday evening of every month to assist those people and families who are short of funds for meals at the end of the month.

Great American smoke out held Nov. 15

Each year thousands of Americans kick the tobacco habit and participate in the Great American Smoke-Out.  Thursday, November 15 is the date that smokers will be asked to stop smoking for just one day with the hope that this will be the beginning of a new tobacco-free lifestyle.

“There are many lifestyle and health benefits to quitting smoking or using tobacco products,” says Shelly Miller, Health Educator. 

ONU’s College of Pharmacy honors three with distinguished alumni award

Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy honored three alumni with Distinguished Alumni Awards on Oct. 31. This is the sixth year that Distinguished Alumni Awards have been presented by the Raabe College of Pharmacy.

Sen. David Burke, a 1990 graduate, Hanley Wheeler, a 1982 graduate, and Suzanne Eastman Wuest, a 1974 graduate, were recognized for their outstanding career accomplishments and their contributions to ONU.

ONU alumni named Ada Distinguished Citizen of the Year

James E. Turner, a 1963 graduate of Ohio Northern University’s College of Pharmacy, former Ohio Northern University professor and former owner of Gardner’s Pharmacy in Ada, was named Ada’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year at the 47th annual Town and Gown Banquet at Ohio Northern University on Monday, Nov. 5.

“Jim embodied what we think about when the phrase ‘town and gown’ is spoken,” said Bob McCurdy, special assistant to the dean of ONU’s College of Pharmacy and longtime friend of Turner.
