Cloyd E. Elwood, age 80, died on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 1:30 a.m. in St. Marys, Ohio at the St. Marys Living Center, where he had been for almost two weeks, after a brave battle over the past year with cancer.
He was born on September 21, 1937 in Hardin County, Ohio to Charles E. and Georgia M. (Williams) Elwood who preceded him in death.
On September 3, 1960 Cloyd married Audrey M. Ganzer and she preceded him in death on December 22, 2002.
Mr. Elwood worked previously at Neon Sign Products/Essex Wire and retired after several years from Lima Iron & Metal Omni Source in 2003.
He was a cook in the U.S. Army serving from 1959 -1961.
He loved people and his family and for many years would take Amish people where they needed to go and pick up grocery items for them.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent time with his grandsons Tony and Kyle doing just that.
He always had a hug for you and would help whoever he could.
He was a sweet man.
Survivors include a foster daughter, Doris (Terry) Essex of Ada and a sister-in-law, Rosemary Elwood of Ada.
Fifty years ago he brought the two of them home to raise as his own.
He was also survived by five foster grandchildren: Kristina (Tony) Aldora of St. Marys, Ray Emlinger of Ada, Jonathon Schindler of Lima, Wanda (Robby) Meyers and Kyle (Taylor) Essex both of Wapakoneta; and five foster great grandchildren and five foster great-great grandchildren; a special niece, Ruth (Paul) Lawrence of Ada; and several nieces and nephews.
Cloyd was preceded in death by a foster granddaughter, Lora Emlinger; three brothers: Oliver Owen, Russell, and Elzie Elwood; and two sisters: Lucille Curtis and Martha F. Conley.
Funeral service will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada with Pastor Thomas Dearth officiating.
It was his request to be cremated following the funeral service.
The burial of the cremains will be at a later date.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service on Thursday, November 2, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada.
