FROM ONU DEPARTMENT OF ART AND DESIGN FACEBOOK - The work of several Ohio Northern University’s art and design alumni were recently selected for exhibit and earned awards at the 72nd May Show at the Mansfield Art Center located in Mansfield, Ohio. The show was a juried exhibition showcasing the talent of Ohio artists in a variety of media.
Guest juror Tom Hale, a painter from Michigan, spent hours pouring over 432 entries, selecting 176 to be included in the show. The show included pieces from 96 artists from all over Ohio. The show opened on May 6 and closes this weekend.
Ed Corle (BFA ’78) won the Whitten Studios Award for Ceramics for a piece call Spring/Blue Rain. After graduating from Ohio Northern, he attended Rochester Institute of Technology School for the American Craftsmen and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1982.
Ed is currently an associate professor of art at The University of Findlay where he teaches ceramics, sculpture and three-dimensional design. He has been with the University since 1986. He has been accepted in many art shows including the Toledo Art Museum’s Area Artist Exhibition. In addition, he participates in regional art fairs and festivals such as the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair and The Black Swamp Arts Festival. He is a member of The Michigan Guild, Ohio Designer Craftsmen and a trustee of the Findlay Art League
Other alumni accepted to the show were:
• Harry Melroy (BA ’71) for a painting called, “Tuning the Yellow Horn.” He currently is a retired teacher from Mohawk junior high school in Sycamore, Ohio. He also taught art at both the University of Findlay and Tiffin University.
Harry has won numerous awards for his work and has recently exhibited at the Mansfield Art Museum, the Sculpture Center in Cleveland, the Toledo Museum of Art’s Toledo Area Artists Exhibition, the University of Minnesota/Morris, and the Projects Gallery in Philadelphia, Pa.
• Laura Barnhardt Corle (BFA ’77) had several watercolor pieces accepted to the show, including “Grass #6.” She recently completed her graduate work at Bowling Green State University and is an instructor at the University of Findlay. She is a free-lance artist in the Findlay area and teaches eight-week watercolor classes in her studio. Laura exhibits locally, regionally and nationally. Her work has been accepted to countless juried exhibitions include the Toledo Area Artists’ Exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art.
She also has participated in many art fairs and festivals such as the Ann Arbor Art Fair and the Black Swamp Arts Festival. She is a member of the Findlay Art League and has a studio in the Jones Building in Findlay.
