Betty Jane Smith 1926 - 2017

Betty Jane (Twigg) Smith, age 91, died Friday, May 12, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Willow Ridge of Bluffton, Ohio.

Betty was born on May 6, 1926 in Knox County, Ohio to John William and Osee Caroline (Cramer) Miller Twigg who preceded her in death. On May 11, 1947 Betty Jane married Albert F. Smith, Jr. who preceded her in death on January 28, 2007. 

Betty Jane was a homemaker. She previously worked at Cooper-Bessemer in Mount Vernon in the Accounting Department until shortly after she married Albert. Betty Jane was a member of the Harrod Christian Church of Harrod, Ohio. She graduated from Centerburg High School in 1944, as Salutatorian. She was active in the PTA and her church. Betty enjoyed her family, she did lots of canning and freezing and she liked to sew. Betty hosted family birthdays and holiday celebrations, along with celebrating her children’s weddings. She researched genealogy with her husband Albert.

Surviving are three sons: Albert F. (Georgia) Smith III of Elida, David O. (Marsha) Smith of Lima and Philip E. (Sherrill) Smith of LaGrange, KY; two daughters: Ellen Patricia Howard of Williamsburg, VA and Vivien Carol (David) Shaffer of Harrod; twelve grandchildren: Albert Smith, IV, Emily Smith, Kristina Kelly, Aaron Howard, Jennifer Shaffer, Matthew Shaffer, Douglas Shaffer, Sally Smith, Suzanne (Smith) Troyer, Robyn Smith, Nicolas Smith, and Amy (Smith) Emrick; twelve great grandchildren: Autumn, Cameron, Elijah, Jakob, Kyle, Lauren, Lilly, Mason, Oliver, Sebastian, Victoria and Zane; and a brother: Brice (Helen) Twigg of Mount Vernon. 

She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Darlene Smith; a sister, Margaret VanHouten; a brother, and Tom Twigg; four half brothers: David, Harley, and John Twigg, and Bill Miller; and five half sisters: Mary (Twigg) Shively, Blanche Miller, Pearl (Miller) Mackenzie, Margie Twigg and Maxine (Twigg) Wilder.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada with Pastor Gary Rummel officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Westminster. 

Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16 and until the time of the service on Wednesday at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Harrod Christian Church memorial fund and/or a charity of the donor’s choice.
