Accept the 2017 Blanchard River Challenge
The Hancock Park District (HPD) is facilitating a series of self-guided float trips with HPD Shuttle Service this spring that cover approximately 37.6 miles of the Blanchard River from Blanchard River Nature Preserve to Blanchard Landing. Cost is $20 per person, per trip, and preregistration is necessary.
• TRIP 1: April 29 will begin with a paddle through Blanchard River Nature Preserve and later along the border of parks, conservation areas, and Riverbend Recreation Area. It is an enjoyable day trip at 20.9 miles. Canoeists and kayakers should plan on portaging one dam near the Findlay reservoir. If the water level is too low to support boating or if too many obstacles exist in the form of fallen trees, an alternative 3-hour, 9.3-mile float trip from Liberty Landing to Blanchard Landing will be offered. Approximate time: 7 hours.
• TRIP 2: May 6 will be a scenic and fun float west of Riverbend Recreation Area and then along the border of conservation areas and parks and through downtown Findlay. It is an enjoyable, physically challenging trip at 16.7 miles with up to six potential portages around three dams and three rock fields, including a long portage at the waterfall near Riverside Park. Approximate time: 6 hours.
• TRIP 3: May 13 is a popular half-day trip. At 9.3 miles, it is scenic, it has no foreseeable obstacles or portages, and there are bends, narrow sections, and riffles to make it interesting and fun. Wildlife sightings are commonplace. If the water level is too low to support boating or if too many obstacles exist in the form of fallen trees, the trip will be cancelled. Approximate time: 3 hours
• TRIP 4: May 20 & May 21 is a two-day float trip that includes up to seven potential portages around dams and rock fields with six potential portages on the second day alone, including a long portage at the waterfall near Riverside Park. Canoeists and kayakers will paddle 20.9 miles on the first day and 16.7 miles on the second day.
Canoeists and kayakers will have the opportunity to see wildlife, enjoy scenic beauty, and in some cases, test their strength, stamina, and perseverance. It is a wonderful way to spend quality time together in the great outdoors.
