Russell Brown was former mayor of Dunkirk

Russell J. Brown, 84, died on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at his residence in Ada.

He was born on June 26, 1930 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, to Estel and Clara (Baldridge) Brown and they preceded him in death. He was formerly married to Wanda J. Gossman from 1950 to 1975 and she died on August 8, 2014. In July of 1978, he married Rose Anna Ball in Virginia and she died on June 14, 2013.

Russell was a retired contractor and owned several different businesses in Kenton and Dunkirk. He was the former Mayor of Dunkirk. He was a member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church of Ada. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who served during the Korean War and then in the U.S. Army Reserves. Russell was a lifetime member of the VFW and the AmVets Posts of Kenton and Ada. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #428 of Kenton and the Eagles Post #2163 of Kenton.

Surviving are two sons, Russell A. (Donna) Brown of Raymond and Dan L. (Chris) Brown of Ada; a daughter, Cathy Sue Harris of Naples, FL; two step sons, Robert Lambert of Vanlue and Jack (Sue) Lambert of Dola; a step daughter, Sandra (Bill) Farabee of Mechanicsburg; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; a brother, Doug (Joyce) Brown of Ada; two sisters, Darlene Casper and Jane (Don) Robinson, both of Ada.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, James R. Brown; two brothers, Robert and Delmer Brown; and a sister, Josephine Hackworth.

Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Pastor Randy Manns officiating. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger with graveside military rites conducted by the Ada VFW Post #9381 Honor Guard.

Friends may call 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post #9381 Ladies Auxiliary.
