David Smittle, director of advancement services at Ohio Northern Unversity and member of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity, was recently elected to the NIC Foundation board of directors at the organization’s annual meeting in Indianapolis.
Founded in 1909, the North-American Interfraternity Conference is the trade association representing the 74 international and national men’s fraternities. The NIC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization which provides development opportunities for fraternity and sorority foundations and supports the educational initiatives of the North-American Interfraternity Conference and the National Panhellenic Conference.
Smittle has been elected to a two-year term on the board. The primary objectives of the NICF are educational in nature and are to support THE Foundations Seminar, founded in 1990, which provides professionals and volunteers who manage and lead fraternal foundations with a forum to collaborate on topics and issues uniquely associated with their organizations, as well as, to host the Institute for Greek Advancement (IGA), founded in 2003, which is a think-tank type resource for fraternity and sorority fund-raising professionals and executives. The IGA also provides continuing education credits towards keeping or earning Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) certification.
Smittle has been a member of the advancement team at Ohio Northern University since 1987, where he is responsible for data processing, reporting and office management and supervises the areas of database maintenance, gift accounting, prospect research and prospect management.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, he performed methods analysis, productivity and staffing studies for the Huntington National Bank in both Columbus and Cleveland.
Over the years, Smittle has served as a member of the ONU’s University Council, chaired the University Judicial Board of Appeals, served on the conference planning committee for SunGard Higher Education’s Banner administrative database software and presented sessions at numerous conferences at both the statewide and national levels. His volunteer service has included the SunGard Higher Education Corporation’s Unified Digital Campus Advisory Board; the Ellucian Corporation’s Community Source Functional Review Team and Banner Advancement Module Advisory Board, as treasurer for the non-profit organization Independent College Advancement Associates (ICAA) and as a past-president and treasurer of the Ada Music Boosters, Inc.
Smittle served two-terms as national president (1996-2000) and is currently treasurer of The National Fraternity of Phi Mu Delta, and served as chairman of The Phi Mu Delta Educational Foundation from 2002-2006. He has served on the finance, nomination and endowment committees at Ada First United Methodist Church and on the faculty of the NIC’s Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Summer Institute in Advancement Services and taught at the Annual Advancement Academy.
Smittle lives in the Village of Ada, with his wife, Kim, and has three children: Douglas, a 2013 graduate of Butler University; Ellen, a senior at Stetson University; and, Evan, a sophomore at Ada High School.
