15 minutes with Drew Crabtree - this conversation goes all over the board!

15 Minutes with Drew Crabtree, 2012 AHS Graduate
By Bailey Bowers

Where are you going to school and what are you studying?
I am currently attending The Ohio State University at Lima and I am majoring in Analytical Broadcasting and Practice with either a Music or Psychology minor. I am planning on making the campus change [to OSU’s main campus in Columbus] in the fall of 2015. When I get there, the plan is to stay in an apartment with a few of my Lima friends instead of living in a dorm. I already did that at Bowling Green, and I most certainly do not want to do that again.

Do you have an idea of your future career plans? What got you interested in broadcasting?
When I eventually graduate, (hopefully before I'm 30) I plan on getting a job as a sportscaster or commentator. My dream would be to get to call Ohio State football games or to be employed by Fox Sports to call Cincinnati Reds games. The biggest reasons for that would be that I have been told I have a good voice for radio or television, and I retain useless sports knowledge like statistics.

If you had to give one piece of advice to graduating high school seniors, what would it be?
If I had to give advice for graduating seniors, it would be two things:
1. Think long and hard about what you are majoring in. Can you see yourself doing that profession happily?
2. If you figure out that your original path is not for you, it is perfectly fine to switch majors. Sure, it may mean more school thus more debt, but would you rather stick with a career you find out you hate or switch to a career you truly love?

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?
Asking me a question about music is a dangerous thing to do, but I'll try to keep it short. I listen to all different kinds of music, but I find that oldies would be what I could say is my all-time favorite. The music of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and some 90's are where the good stuff is at. Overall, my favorite band is Mayday Parade. Although, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, and a little-known band from Columbus called Twenty-One Pilots are not too far behind.

You played soccer in high school and you’re a fan of the sport. What team are you rooting in for the World Cup, and why?
I love futbol! I am heavily rooting for our U.S. Men's National team, but if we do not get out of what many people call "The Group of Death," then I think seeing Brazil win in their home country would be cool. Germany, Argentina, and England are also teams I'd take exception to, unless they were playing the U.S.

Actually, you’re a big sports fan in general. What are your favorite teams to watch? Do you have a hands-down favorite in all of sports?
Well, considering that my major is involved with sports, you can say I love it all. I would have to say I have favorite teams in each professional league: Cincinnati Reds [MLB], Cincinnati Bengals [NFL], Boston Celtics [NBA], Columbus Blue Jackets [NHL], Manchester City [English Premier League soccer], and Columbus Crew [MLS]. In collegiate sports, I root for both my Ohio State Buckeyes as well as the Bowling Green State University Falcons. I couldn't say that I have an overall favorite, but the Reds, Bengals, and Buckeyes are my Big 3, so to speak.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose and why?
This is a good question. I would probably be The Doctor [from the British science-fiction television show Doctor Who]. Getting to travel in all space and time would be an absolutely amazing opportunity. Plus, hanging around with Billie Piper, Karen Gillian, and Jenna Louise-Coleman would not be a negative in the least bit. If I couldn't be a Time Lord, I'd be a Pokémon trainer. That's all I'll say about that.

Do you have a nickname you’d like to share? How did you get it?
I have had many nicknames, but the one that has been weirdly prevalent would be Toddrew. I have had three separate groups of people start calling me that and it's very bizarre to say the least. It is derived from the fact my name is Todd Andrew Crabtree, legally, and whenever I get a job or anything they call me Todd. I inform everyone to call me Drew, so they just combine the two, I guess.

Any final thoughts you’d like to share?
The only thing that I'd like to add is that it is OK to go to a branch campus. I went through high school thinking I was better than a little branch campus, and boy was I wrong! It's not main campus, that's for sure, but the people are just as awesome. Also, if you are looking at OSU Lima, just remember this: Chorale and Carmony [two vocal music groups on campus] are awesome and you should so totally try out!
