UFOs, Bigfoot, crocheting and the Ada Public Library? You bet

Q: What do UFOs, Bigfoot, crocheting and the Ada Public Library have in common?

A: The first three items on the list are program topics this summer at the library. That's only for starters. The library offers a huge selections of activities to keep residents of any age busy this summer.

Monthly calendars are in attachments at the bottom of this story.

Here's the June and July schedule:

WEEKLY/Bi-WEEKLY ACTIVITIES:
Family Storytimes: Join us each Tuesday night for storytime! Our storytimes run roughly 45 minutes and contain a variety of stories, songs, flannel boards, finger plays, and art projects which help your child/children get ready to read/further their enjoyment reading!

Knit n’ Crochet Club: Love to sit and knit? Love to chat and make new friends? Are you an old pro, wanting to share your passion and ideas? Are you a beginner who needs a little help? Join us at the Ada Library as we gather to knit and crochet!

Lego-Palooza: Pop in for some fun building and creating with Legos. Lego sets are supplied, but feel free to bring something to share!

Make & Take Mondays: Like the name suggests, pop in to the Library for crafts. Crafts will vary from week to week, geared toward K-5th grades.

Playdate: Bring your kids (age 3-5 years) for some play time where they will be able to enjoy their peers, and parents can enjoy some time chatting with one another. Toys and games will be provided, just bring yourself.

Sensory Science: Geared toward the 18mos.-4yrs. old crowd, we’ll explore simple science concepts with age appropriate activities.

Sidewalk Chalk: Families can join us around the OUTSIDE of the library for some fun chalking up our sidewalks. Children MUST be old enough to not require adult supervision near streets, or parents MUST stay with children.

Totally Science Tuesdays: Join us as we experiment and create with projects geared toward STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Projects are geared toward their specific age group; age information is on the calendar.

Thunder Game Thursdays: As indicated on the calendar we will bounce between Wii game days and Family Games. On Family Game days stop in for board games, puzzles, or a game of UNO! Just bring yourself!

Wacky Wednesday Movie Days: Stop by the library for a movie—we provide the popcorn, you bring a drink. Space is limited so arrive early. Parents are expected to stay with any children 8 years old or younger; if dropping kids off, please make sure seats are still available before you leave. Wednesday morning films are geared toward all ages, Wednesday afternoon films are for teens and adults, and may be rated PG-13.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

“Christmas in July” Gingerbread Houses: Missed out on the gingerbread house building fun in December? No problem, join us as we create our best graham cracker “gingerbread houses.”

Gross-ology: Join us for a day of hands on gross science fun; wear clothes you don’t mind mucking up!

Junkbox Creations: Ms. Natalie will load the tables with leftover crafts and odds n’ ends so kids can make whatever they’d like. An afternoon of creativity!

Lego Robotics: A teacher from Snapology of Findlay will be showing us the robotic side of Lego play. SIGN-UP REQUIRED!

Mad Scientist Fashion Show: Kids will be put onto teams and given different items with the goal of making the best looking mad scientist in a time contest. Winning team takes home glory, honor, and prizes.

Mr. Molecule: Come for some science, magic, and laugh out loud fun as Mr. Molecule shows us just how cool science can be for everyone. Event will be at ADA HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (1200 S. Main St.)

Pool Party: This is our Summer Reading wrap up party. We’ll enjoy a couple hours swimming at the Ada Pool, and a pizza party to boot! SIGN-UP REQUIRED!

Pre-School Information Expo: We will have representatives from some of the area preschools here at the Library, fielding questions and passing out information.

StarLab: This event will be held at Ada Visiting Nurses (1200 South Main Street) Brought to us by the folks at the Imagination Station in Toledo, kids will be able to come in and experience the constellations and night sky inside a blown-up lab. SIGN-UP REQUIRED! Event will be at ADA HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (1200 S. Main St.)

Turtle Lady:  This event will be held at Ada Visiting Nurses (1200 South Main Street)
Join us as we learn about reptiles and amphibians with some hands on time!
Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 45th B-Day party: Join us for snacks, crafts, and fun in celebration of Eric Carle’s beloved bug!

Vision Screenings: The Ada Lions Club will be offering FREE vision screenings for Preschool and Kindergarteners; get your young readers ready for school in the fall!

10 Things You Never Knew about Investing: Brought to you FREE by the non-profit org, Institute for Financial Literacy, an hour long workshop where we’ll learn about investment basics, types of risks, and today’s market, among other things!
Bigfoot in Ohio:  Join us as we listen to stories about Bigfoot investigations, and see pictures from investigations.

Book Speed Dating: Attendees will be given the opportunity to get to know a book in 2 minutes, to introduce them to books they might not normally pick up for themselves! A fun way for those “what should I read next” folks to pick out their next book!

“The Dead Speak with the Living” w/Dr. Kuk: Join us as Ada Physician/County Coroner Dr. Kuk discusses some of the science behind the forensics of death.

History of Hardin County Cemeteries: A member of Hardin County’s Genealogical Society will be presenting information on our local cemeteries.

“The Night Sky”:   Join us as we are guided through an evening of stargazing with ONU Professor Jason Pinkney. This event will be held at the ONU Observatory (see attached map).

Paranormal Investigations: An evening full of hearing about paranormal investigations, local haunted sites, and seeing the equipment the investigators use, as well as the evidence they’ve collected.

UFO Sightings: We’ll be joined by someone from Lima’s LAURA UFO group who will present information about UFO sightings. 

Your Amazing Brain: Join us as we hear all about the amazing human brain and what we can do to keep our minds strong!
