Applications for open enrollment at Ada Schools

On March 1, the Ada Schools began taking appications for open enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year. The schools will take applications through May 13. Acceptance or transfer by applicants must be indicated by July 1.

The inter-district open enrollment guidelines state:

"No student, once accepted by the Ada Exempted Village Schools, will be displaced should enrollment exceed any stated limits. Native Ada students will have priority over transferring inter-district open enrollment student.   

Established limits:

Grades K-6:    1:25 Pupil/Teacher Ratio Average

Grades 7-8:    1:27 Pupil/Teacher Ratio Average

Local family provides window on invasion of Ukraine

Q & A with Christian Groman

Christian Groman, who grew up in Bluffton, Ohio and is currently studying Mechanical Engineering at Ohio Northern University, spoke to the Icon about his family members who live in western Ukraine and their experiences since the invasion by Russian forces began on February 24, 2022. Some 1.5 million Ukrainians have fled the county at the time of this report.

Icon: Are your family members still in their own homes?

Groman: My grandparents live in western Ukraine, 15 minutes from the Hungarian border…. But they are housing three families from eastern Ukraine.

Icon: My understanding is that Ukraine is almost the size of Texas.

ONU baseball undergoing a youth movement in 2022

The Ohio Northern baseball team enters its 2022 season with a young roster, but 11th-year head coach Gene Stechschulte is excited about the group's potential.

"This will be the first season since my first year at ONU that there's going to be question marks at most of the positions," Stechschulte said. "There's a mix of excitement and not knowing how things are going to work out because we haven't seen many of our younger guys in games yet. It'll certainly be different, but with that comes excitement."

Sarah Nichols played for the Miracle League of Findlay

Sarah Nichols, age 20, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022, at 9:40 a.m. at Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.

She was born on May 17, 2001, in Toledo, Ohio to Chad (Letitia) Nichols and Angie (Dave) Haugh.      

Also surviving are a sister, Lindsay Nichols; step-siblings: Justin Haugh, Mitchell (Ashley) Haugh, Chad Haugh, Troy Haugh, Brittani (Ronnie) Oates, Brianna (Andrew) Kunst, Landry (Erin) Zehender; paternal grandfather, Paul Nichols; paternal step-grandmother, Lynn Nichols; paternal step-grandfather, Lenny Lilly; paternal great grandmother, Delores Lewis; maternal step-grandmother, Carol Haugh; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Arron Corbet worked for U.S. Autoclave

Arron Corbet, age 58, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at 3:19 a.m. at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

He was born on March 7, 1963, in Lima, Ohio to the late Herbert and Jeanette (Gleason) Corbet.   On May 15, 1987, Arron married Lori Johnson and she survives in Ada.

Also surviving are his two children: Zachary Corbet of Lima and Mackenzie Corbet of Miamisburg; a sister, Pamela (Neil) Werling of Waynesfield; and a brother, Arnold Corbet of Maysville.  

Ada's McClain wrestles at district meet

Ada High School sophomore Clayton McClain competed in the Div. III district wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5, at Hobart Arena in Troy.

McClain authored a 1-2 mark in the 126 lbs. bracket of the double-elmination event to finish his season with a 27-11 record.

McClain won his first-round match Friday by a 5-3 decision over fellow sophomore Levi Griffin of Middletown Madison.

In his second round bout vs. undefeated Miami East senior Max Shore, McClain was pinned at 1:09 to drop into the consolation bracket.
