Wheat harvest following rains

By Laura Lindsey and Pierce Paul-OSU Extension, Ag Crops Team and edited by Mark Badertscher-OSU Extension, Hardin County

HARDIN COUNTY, Ohio–While many areas of Ohio have already successfully harvested wheat, there are fields that still need to be harvested. With rainfall this week, harvest may be delayed. Late harvest coupled with excessive rainfall means more time for late-season mold growth, mycotoxin accumulation, test weight reduction, and sprouting; all of which could result in poor overall grain quality.

Wheat harvest

An Icon reader wants to know, what's the status on the wheat harvest? Mark Badertscher-OSU Extension says wheat matured early this year and was mostly harvested by last week. Yield reports range from 76-105 bushels/acre; moisture content was 12.5%-17.5% with good test weights and good grain quality. Overall it was a good year for wheat with good market prices. See this new article on wheat yet to be harvested.
