Summer garden programs offered by Hardin Co. master gardenres

Free events on June 15, July 20 and August 17

HARDIN COUNTY–The Hardin County OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers are hosting three summer garden programs at the Friendship Gardens of Hardin County located at 960 W. Kohler Street in  Kenton. The programs will begin with an event on “Hugelkulture” on June 15, “Worm Composting” on  July 20, and another on “Growing Cabbage, Broccoli, and Kohlrabi” on August 17. 

Learn about Hugelkulture on Thursday, June 15 from 6:00-7:00 pm. Hugelkulture is a centuries old  traditional way of building a garden bed from rotten logs and plant debris. This program will be  presented by Hardin County OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Kim Thomas. 

A great way to make the richest and cheapest compost for all your garden plants is to practice Worm  Composting. Join Hardin County OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Kim Thomas on Thursday,  July 20 from 6:00-7:00 pm for this educational program to enhance your garden’s soil.

Registration for 2nd annual PPK competition is open

As a part of the 7th Annual Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival, the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2nd annual Punt, Pass & Kick USA, Inc. sanctioned competition. Free for boys and girls aged 6-15, the event takes place on the afternoon of the August 26 festival The registration link HERE is now open on PPKUSA's website.

2023 Hardin County Tractor Pullers season includes three Ada events

The Hardin County Tractor Pullers have announced details for the June 10 Annual Ada War Memorial Spring Pull at the Ada War Memorial Park. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m., registration will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Warmer weather is here and parents all over the county are excited to break their kids loose from the house. The past few years, the COVID-19 social guidelines limited kid activities, including comfort levels and social distancing at the playground. Kids are starting to fill up the playgrounds again, which means it is a good time to revisit the benefits of playground play with your children.

The playground offers a unique environment for building skills. There is a lot of development and therapeutic growth that can happen in an environment like a playground. Other than the obvious areas of development, such as strength and gross motor skills, children also learn body awareness, sensory regulation, executive functioning skills and self-esteem.

The following lists a few ways to use basic playground equipment to help your child develop and grow this summer.

Roadway fatalities increase over Memorial Day weekend

COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reporting 22 crashes resulting in 23 deaths on Ohio’s roadways during the 2023 Memorial Day weekend according to provisional statistics. This is the highest number of traffic fatalities in Ohio since 2020 when 20 individuals were killed. The four-day reporting period began Friday, May 26 and ran through Monday, May 29.
