All-Ohio Honors Band and more on Freed Center Stage Sunday
The Ohio Northern University Symphonic Band, Northern Winds, and the All-Ohio Honors Band will perform as part of the Spring Band Festival XXXIX in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, April 27, at 4 p.m.
The concert features Brant Karrick as the guest conductor. Karrick joined the faculty of Northern Kentucky University in fall 2003 as director of bands. His prior teaching experience includes nine years at the University of Toledo and seven years of public school teaching in Kentucky. At NKU, he administrates the entire band program, including the symphonic winds, the concert band and the basketball pep band. He also teaches classes in conducting, music education and marching band techniques and assists with student teacher supervision.
Northern Winds will perform a concert that features “Fanfare Nueve” by John Fannin, a “Festival of Prelude” by Alfred Reed, “Perthshire Majesty” by Samuel R. Hazo, and “See Rock City” by Karrick. The program also features “Beyond the Horizon” by Rossano Galante. Northern Winds is under the direction of Charles Bates.
A highlight of the Spring Band Festival is the All-Ohio Honors Band, which features more than 120 gifted instrumentalists from across the state. Under Karrick’s direction, the All-Ohio Honors Band will perform “Heatherwood Portrait” by James Barnes, “The Phantom Herd” by Robert Smith, “Call of the Wild” by Brian Balmages, “Country Garden” by Percy Grainger, and “They Shall Run and Be Free” by Karrick.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors, and $5 for ONU faculty, students and staff and children. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone orders are accepted with American Express, MasterCard, VISA or Discover by calling 419-772-1900.
