Ohio Northern University President Daniel A. DiBiasio announced that Steven J. Martin, professor and chairman of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Toledo, has been named dean of ONU’s Raabe College of Pharmacy. Martin replaces Tom Kier, who has served as interim dean for the past year.
“Ohio Northern University is pleased to welcome Dr. Martin to our campus and leadership team,” DiBiasio said. “Steve’s outstanding academic credentials and scholarly body of work, along with his experience, passion for teaching and enthusiasm, make him a perfect fit to lead the Raabe College of Pharmacy.”
Martin, who has served as chair of the University of Toledo’s Department of Pharmacy Practice in the University of Toledo’s College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences since 2004, has spent 18 years in higher education. In addition to his position as chair, Martin served as co-director of the Infectious Disease Research Laboratory at the University of Toledo.
“The Raabe College of Pharmacy is one of the premier institutions for pharmacist training in the nation,” Martin said. “Our alumni are serving in leadership positions across the profession, and our faculty and staff are well known and well respected in the academy. It is my privilege, and great honor, to serve as the dean during what I expect will be a defining moment for the profession of pharmacy and for our college.”
Martin graduated from Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy in 1983 and from Ferris with the Doctor of Pharmacy in 1992. He completed post-doctoral fellowship training in critical care and infectious diseases pharmacotherapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Martin continued on faculty at UIC until moving to the University of Toledo in 1997.
Martin was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2002 and has served as the department chair since December 2004. He also holds a faculty appointment in the college of medicine. Martin is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist with added qualifications in infectious diseases, a distinction he has held since 1994.
He was elected a fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine in 2002 and a fellow in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in 2004. Martin has served in leadership positions in the Society of Critical Care Medicine and currently is an elected pharmacist representative to the Society’s governing Council.
Martin has practiced pharmacy in the critical care setting since 1985, and his research focus is on infection in the critically ill. Martin also directs an infectious disease/critical care pharmacy fellowship program at University of Toledo and established specialty and general practice residency programs at the University of Toledo in conjunction with faculty from the University of Toledo Medical Center.
Martin has published numerous books, book chapters, research papers, and critical reviews on infection and critical illness in a variety of peer-reviewed publications. He recently served as editor of the Injectable Drug Reference, published by the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
Martin is a Michigan native, a third-generation pharmacist, and a third-generation Ferris graduate. He and his wife, Karen, have four children.
