Volleyball: Balanced attack lifts ONU over Wooster

Ten different players registered kills as the Ohio Northern volleyball team swept Wooster 25-9, 25-15, 26-24 Wednesday night at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 12-7 overall, while the Scots fall to 5-16.

The match was the final non-conference contest of the regular season for ONU.

Sophomore Ellie Gillespie  and Anna Ricker  and freshman Kelli Weininger  each had six kills to lead a balanced ONU offensive attack.

In all, 14 different Polar Bears saw action and 10 had kills and seven had four kills or more.

Sophomore Heather Saunier  dished out a match-high 22 assists and senior Jeni Kmic  had a match-high 18 digs for the Polar Bears.

Wooster was led by Lydia Webster with seven kills.

Northern hit .215 for the match with 41 kills and 15 errors, while the Scots hit .128 on 28 kills and 14 errors.

The Polar Bears dominated Set 1, racing to leads of 8-2 and 15-4.

Leading 19-9, Northern scored the final six points to win the set 25-9.

In Set 2, the polar Bears used a 9-0 run to break a 4-4 tie and take a 13-4 lead.

The Scots answered with an 8-1 run to pull within 14-12, but Northern answered with a 5-0 run keyed by a kill by Weininger and an ace by freshman Kristin Sessler  to regain a 19-12 lead.

Northern empties the bench in Set 3 and Wooster took advantage early, and used a 6-2 run to go ahead 14-9.

A service ace by freshman Mackenzie Griffith  put ONU on top 20-18, but Wooster went on a 5-1 run to go ahead 23-22.

The Scot lead was 24-23 when ONU scored the final three points to win the match.

The Polar Bears will return to Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday with a 12:30 pm match at Baldwin Wallace.
