Hattie Dearth - next year she's be in the Army National Guard

15 minutes with Hattie Dearth, Ada High School senior

What classes are you taking this year?
Psychology/Sociology, Calculus, English 12 CP, Spanish IV, Personal Finance and Physics.

Tell me about the organizations you belong to.
I’m on Student Council, Foreign Language Club and National Honor Society. I volunteer at the Lima YMCA and during the summer at ReStore.

What are your plans after high school?
I’m going to enter the Army National Guard. I’ll have 10 weeks of training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, this summer and then in Advanced Individual Training I’ll become a food server specialist.

Wow. That sounds exciting and scary both. What thoughts go through your mind when you think about it?
I’m nervous, but excited about it. I’ll be in active duty for six years and inactive readiness reserve for two years after that. I plan to enroll in college in the fall or spring of 2015. I’m looking at University of Findlay, Ohio State University or Wilmington. I hope to go into animal science and pre-vet.

Were any of your family members in the Guard?
My grandfather was in the Army National Guard and was a cook. He said, “Go for it,” but the rest of my family tried to talk me out of it.

Where would you like to be living in 10 years?
I like the west. I have family in Texas. Maybe I’ll be in Texas.

Tell me about your wheels.
I’m driving a 2003 Ford Explorer with a bunch of miles on it.

What’s the most recent movie you watched and rate it for me.
It was “Dear John” with Channing Tatum – I’m a big fan – and I loved it. I’d give it five stars.

How many times have you watched it?
Ten. At least 10.

Okay, what about some other movies?
I’ve watched “Titanic” probably 20 times. I’ve watched “Major Payne” probably 1,000 times since I was 3.

Could you turn off the sound and mouth the entire dialogue?
Yes.

What have you read lately?
“Walking Disaster,” and “Beautiful Disaster.” Both are fiction. Each is the same story but told from the perspective of different characters. I’d give “Walking” a five and “Beautiful” a three.

What’s your favorite subject this year?
Physics. It’s about force and acceleration. It’s pretty challenging. Mr. Lusk, the teacher reminds us to “plug and chug.” That means there’s formula to put into all the problems. It’s lots of math and easy for me.

What kind of music is on your cell phone?
Let’s see, I have 212 songs. Some are Country, Spanish, Pop – you know 93.9 – some Rap and some ‘70s-‘80s.

What advice would you give to kindergartners?
Be respectful.

Well, thank you for talking with me and good luck this year and beyond.
