Women's Soccer: ONU battles to 1-1 draw with Case Western Reserve

By Andrew Korba

In one of the premiere matchups of opening weekend in NCAA Division III women's soccer, the No. 12 Ohio Northern women's soccer team tied No. 17 Case Western Reserve by a 1-1 score Sunday afternoon at the ONU Soccer Field.

ONU is now 0-0-2 on the season and Spartans now stand at 1-0-1.

The Polar Bears struck first in the 16th minute when sophomore Kristina Klusek blasted her second goal of the season into the right side of the net.

Senior Paige Garber picked up the assist on the play.

The Spartans had chance to score in the 20th and 22nd minute, but senior goalie Erin Waehner made two nice saves to knock away the attempts.

Case Western would tie it in the 56th minute on a goal by Jessie Sabers.

The game would remain tied at 1-1 throughout the rest of regulation.

In the first overtime, Klusek almost ended things by dribbling around the Spartan defense, but goalie Megan Romelfanger made a nice save to block the shot away away.

The Spartans had a chance to win it in the closing moments of the game, but Rachel Borque's shot sailed wide in the 109th minute.

Waehner registered five saves for ONU and now moves to 0-0-2 on the season.

Romelfanger played the second half and both overtimes for the Spartans making four saves in the process. Her record now stands at 0-0-1.

Cameron Casson started at goalie for Case and didn't make a save.

The Spartans outshot the Polar Bears by a 15-9 margin and recoded six shots on goal, compared to five for ONU.

Ohio Northern will be in action again on Saturday when they play in the Wooster Invitational against Earlham (Ind.) at 1:30 pm.
