From from ONU on All-Ohio Athletic Conference softball squad

Four Ohio Northern student/athletes were named All-Ohio Athletic Conference in softball for 2013 in voting conducted by the league's 10 head coaches.

Juniors Colleen Baliga and Christin Miller were First Team All-OAC honorees, freshman Anne Dreher was a Second Team pick and senior Michelle Sweet was named Honorable Mention All-OAC.

Baliga moved to third base in 2013 and had a breakout year, finishing second on the team in batting with a .362 average.

She also had three home runs and 11 RBI while scoring 20 runs while committing only four errors in the field all year.

Bridge Hospice Bereavement camp for youth in Findlay

Bridge Hospice Bereavement Services will be hosting its annual bereavement camp for children, Camp S.T.A.R., June 10-12 from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brugeman Lodge at Riverbend Park in Findlay.

Camp S.T.A.R., which stands for Special Times Always Remembered, is a three-day bereavement camp for children ages 6-12 who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Campers participate in fun, traditional camp activities combined with grief and loss education. Together, campers realize they are not alone with some of the questions and feeling they have been facing.

Helping students who have learning disorders become more socialized

May is “better hearing and speech month.” The Icon took this opportunity to talk with Sherry Miller, Ada schools speech language pathologist.

The interview coincided with a fire drill. Miller was with a pre-schooler at the time. She thought it was best that she walked with the student and stayed with her during the drill so the student wouldn’t become scared.

I agreed and followed the two outside. All the while Miller assured the pre-schooler that everything was going to be okay and not to worry, “We will all take care of you,” she said, referring to the teachers and students standing outside.

Where did you grow up?

In the country between Cairo and Columbus Grove, OH.

From where and when did you graduate from high school?

Bath High 1990

How did you end up attending Goshen College? Were you a music major? You also have a master's degree, correct?

My church introduced me to Goshen College and attended music camp there each summer.  I studied piano performance.  My Master of Arts in Piano Pedagogy is from The Ohio State University.  I studied composition and music theory at BGSU.

What was your first job? What did you learn from that?

Buy Local First Hardin County spring scavenger hunt in the works

The Hardin County Chamber & Business Alliance will host a Buy Local First Hardin County Spring Scavenger Hunt May 25 to June 3. The Alliance is currently seeking 30 businesses to partner with.

This effort is designed to encourage residents to keep their dollars within the community.

The focus of the campaign is to inform community members about the economic and cultural benefits of buying local. Buy Local First Hardin County firmly believes that buying locally helps to keep Hardin County unique, reduces environmental impact, creates more jobs, and encourages local success.
