The No. 12 Ohio Northern women's soccer team opened their 2012 campaign with a 1-1 tie against Grove CIty (Pa.) Friday afternoon at the ONU Soccer Field.
Both teams stand at 0-0-1 on the young season.
The Polar Bears struck first when sophomore Kristina Klusek took a pass from junior Lauryn Zielinski and rocketed a shot from the top right of the goalie box into the net.
The goal was her first of the season.
Klusek almost gave added another goal in the 51st minute by making a nice move in the right of the goalie box around a defender.
She fired a shot that was knocked down and pinned against the sidebar of the net by Wolverine goalie Kristi Lathrop.
Grove City then tied the score at 1-1 in the 62nd minute when Sam Weber put the ball in the net.
The Wolverines almost took the lead in the 73rd minute when Kristen Thomas fired a shot from seven yards out, but senior goalkeeper Erin Waehner made a diving stop.
A rebound effort from Beck McManus sailed wide keeping the score all tied at one.
ONU had a chance to to win in the first overtime when senior Nicole Grant fired a shot that sailed just high.
Senior midfielder Abbie Schauble had a scoring chance in the second overtime but her shot went high as well.
Waehner (0-0-1) faced nine shots on goal and made eight saves for the Polar Bears.
Lathrop made five saves for Grove City and is now 0-0-1 on the season.
Ohio Northern will be in action again on Sunday when they host No. 17 Case Western Reserve at 1 pm at the ONU Soccer Field.
