The No. 4 Ohio Northern men's soccer team continued their great start to the season as they defeated Defiance College 5-1 in the opening match of the ONU Invitational at the ONU Soccer Field Friday afternoon.
Ohio Northern advances to 4-0-0 on the season while the Yellow Jackets of Defiance fall to 0-3-0.
The Polar Bears got off to a quick start as seniors Josh Green and Nate Bascom got touches on the ball before a pass to senior Cameron Johnson resulted in Johnson's fourth goal of the season in the 3rd minute of the game.
Just a few minutes later freshman Keegan Ross turned a pass from Bascom into his fifth goal of the season in the eighth minute.
In the ninth minute the game was delayed for lightning.
With a 2-0 lead coming out of the delay, it didn't take long for the Polar Bears to get back on the scoreboard as senior Chris Matejka headed the ball to Bascom who put it in the net in the 18th minute.
The second half started with a 3-0 Polar Bear lead and a new goalkeeper for Defiance.
In the 61st minute Ohio Northern scored again as Bascom took a free ball and beat the goalie to the left for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
Defiance got on the scoreboard as Chad Brooks score the only goal for the Yellow Jackets in the 63rd minute.
Then, in the 81st minute, junior Jeremy Barnes scored the final goal of the contest as he got his second goal of the season off of a free kick.
Church got his fourth win of the season making two saves in the process.
Defiance goalies had eight saves; two by Sean Roberts and six by Sean Mukhtar.
With the loss, Roberts falls to 0-3-0 on the season.
The Polar Bears took 23 shots with 13 of them being on goal, while Defiance only took five shots with 3 being on goal.
Ohio Northern will take the field again tomorrow at 2:30 pm as they take on No. 13 Carnegie Mellon in the final match of the ONU Invitational.
