Western Ohio chapter of Lincoln Highway meets Dec. 17

The Gomer Congregational Church will host this month’s Lincoln Highway Association Western Ohio Chapter meeting.

The meeting is at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the church, 7350 Gomer Road, Gomer, one block south of the Lincoln Highway.

After attendees order dinner individually from Uncle Al's menu, there will be a presentation about Admiral Byrd's Snow Cruiser that crashed through a bridge in Gomer in 1939.  After the presentation, members will visit the Gomer Welsh Community Museum.  The public is invited.

Opal Holbrook was former co-owner of Holbrook's Homestyle Restaurant, Alger

Opal J. Holbrook, 83, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at 12:25 a.m. at Richland Manor, Bluffton.

She was born on March 28, 1930, outside of McGuffey, to Edward and Susie (Allen) Poe and they preceded her in death. On Oct. 18, 1947, she married Charles "Chuck" Holbrook and he died on Sept. 2, 2009.

She was a cook and co-owner of Holbrook's Homestyle Restaurant in Alger and retired as a cook for Upper Scioto Valley School. She was an active member of the Alger Memorial Day Committee. She was a member of the McGuffey Church of Christ and attended the Pandora Church of Christ. 

Elearea Roberts was retired from Wilson Sporting Goods

Elearea M. Roberts, 80, died on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at 5:27 p.m. at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.

She was born on April 24, 1933 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, to Add and Flora (Carpenter) Marshall, who preceded her in death. In 1962 she married Orva Roberts and he died in 1996.

She was a homemaker and she retired from Wilson Sporting Goods of Ada after working for 18 years. She was a member of the Pentecostal Tabernacle Church of Alger.

Ada's biggest Christmas party a big hit thanks to "Ada Friends"

ONU students Jerrod Amstutz and Austin Hilverding, co-coordinators of Ada Friends, hosted Ada's biggest Christmas party on Sunday.

Ada Friends matches Ada kindergarteners through eighth graders with an Ohio Northern University student mentor.

On Sunday you might say the two students played a bit of Santa during the Friends Christmas party.

They helped over 90 ONU students and their elementary matches enjoy Christmas as they decorated cookies, – 17 dozen in all - wrote letters to Santa, created Christmas tree ornaments, pinned a nose on Rudolph and watched a Christmas movie. The two-hour party took place in McIntosh Center at ONU.
