Dance 60x60 sold out at Freed Center, standby for tickets

The Saturday, February 1 and Sunday, February 2 performances of Dance 60x60 have sold out, according to Tricia Calver, Director of the Freed Center for the Performing Arts.

APL Winter Reading Challenge wraps up February 28

The Winter Reading Challenge is happening now at Ada Public Library! You can sign up online at http://adalibrary.readsquared.com or come into the library to get registered.

Individuals who complete the winter reading challenge have their choice of a cozy flannel blanket or a free small drink from Buckeye East!

Kids have their own prize box to choose from. The library will be wrapping things up on February 28, so don't delay...come in soon and start reading!

Ada girls basketball loss at Red Devils

ARLINGTON - The visiting Ada High School girls basketball team started well but went cold and lost 40-27 to Arlington in a defensive Blanchard Valley Conference battle Thursday, January 30.

Ada led 22-18 at halftime after authoring a 15-10 second period. But the Bulldogs mustered only five second-half points and got outscored 22-5 to lose by 13.

The Bulldog record dropped to 2-16 overall and 0-8 in the BVC after the road defeat. Arlington improved to 7-11 overall and 2-6 in BVC play with the victory.  

“In the first half we scored quite a bit by breaking their press,” said Ada head coach Zach Ricker. “In the second half, they played halfcourt man defense and pressured the ball, and didn’t allow anything easy.”

BVHS Auxiliary scholarship application period is open

The Blanchard Valley Health System Auxiliary scholarship application period is open and applications are available online to students in the Hancock County area planning to pursue a health-related career or field of study. 

The purpose of the Auxiliary Scholarship is to financially assist local high school seniors in pursuing a health-related career. Heather Schalk, volunteer services manager, said that profession could range from dental hygienist to nurse to physician.

This year, 10 students will be awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship. The scholarships are funded through the annual Auxiliary membership dues.

A delightful debut novel, Remarkable Bright Creatures

What a delightful book! "Remarkably Bright Creatures" (HarperCollins, 2022) by a debut author, Shelby Van Pelt. This book has been on the New York Times bestseller list numerous times since its publication and the author won a Reader's Choice Award for Best Debut Writer. 

It remains one of the most read pop-fiction books and was the first unanimous selection by Ada Book Club members for 2025. I have to thank Jill Simmons for bringing this book to our attention.

Tony Treglia worked for Superior Coach Sheller Globe

Tony Joseph Treglia, age 93, of Lima, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at Vancrest of Ada, surrounded by his family.  

He was born on July 15, 1931 in Lima, Ohio to the late Filipo and Maria (Salterelli) Treglia.  On June 17, 1949 Tony married Carolyn M. Hefner, she preceded him in death on May 23, 2024. 

Tony retired from Superior Coach Sheller Globe of Lima and was a farmer. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, LaFayette.  Tony was a former School Board member for the Allen East Schools.

2024 Ada Code Enforcement Report

Village of Ada Code Enforcement Officer Clayton Eichman presented his 2024 end of year report to council on January 21. He provided names, locations and notes on code violations (pages 17-31 of Council Packet).

Since beginning the role in September 2024, Eichman has opened 31 Code Violation cases and continued work on 16 cases carried over from the previous officer. He has closed 11 cases.

Everything Old Is New Again: hMPV and health

Anne Murray sang Everything Old Is New Again on episode 415 of The Muppet Show, which aired on February 1, 1980 in the United Kingdom and March 10, 1980 in New York City.  Anne sings while different Muppet characters including Scooter are on skateboards going in and out of the sketch.  

In 1987, Anne Murray was the first female country artist to earn triple platinum for an album.  Anne is from Canada and first started recording her music in 1967.  She retired in 2008 and has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.

Murray’s song is a good descriptor for the current news about the hMPV virus.  Why?

The human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is similar to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and most of us have been exposed to hMPV before the age of 5.
