It's Hardin County Fair week. Here's an update of fair events from the Hardin County Chamber and Business Alliance.

ONU football preview: Season opens with night game at Denison

Dean Paul: "We anticipate (last year's) experience will provide for intense competition for playing time, which will benefit us in 2019"

The Ohio Northern football team is optimistic entering the 2019 season under 16th-year head coach Dean Paul.

The Polar Bears are coming off an injury-plagued 2018 campaign, going 5-5 overall.

Despite having 39 different players start games, including 24 different players on defense, ONU posted an upper division finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference for an impressive 22nd time in the past 24 seasons, tying for fifth in the 10-team OAC with a 4-5 league record.

Prizes will be given to youth who come out to play

A tennis Fun Night/Celebration is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. on the newly refurbished tennis courts at the Ada Park.  

Kids and their parents are encouraged to come (please bring your tennis rackets and tennis shoes) for some fun tennis activities on the courts.

Kids – there could also be some prizes to win as well.  Invitations will also be going out to those who made financial contributions to the newly renovated tennis courts to recognize and thank them.

A rain date in case of inclement weather is set for Monday, Sept. 9.

Bulldog golfers in NWC quad meet

VAN WERT - The Ada golf team registered a good score and finished third in a well-played league quadrangular makeup match at Hickory Sticks Golf Club Tuesday evening.

Lincolnview won the tight match with 190 strokes. Grove was a close (192) second, with Ada (196) a strong third and Crestview fourth (226).

Senior Ethan Hull and Brevin Sizemore tied for Bulldog team honors with good nine-hole scores of 46. Senior Alex Morgan shot 50 and sophomore Dexter Woods was the fourth Ada scorer with a 54.

Soph Kamron Wilkerson carded a 56 and junior Jacob Morgan added  score of 56.

Ada boys blank Lancers; outscored opponents 19-4 during win streak

MIDDLE POINT - The visiting Ada boys soccer team won its fourth consecutive match with a 2-0 shutout of Lincolnview in Northwest Conference action Tuesday evening.

The Bulldog record improved to 4-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the NWC with the victory. Ada has outscored its opponents 19-4 during its four-match win streak.

The Lancers fell to 1-3 and 0-1 in the NWC after the defeat.

Ada senior Skylar Williams netted one goal on a penalty kick, and classmate Isaac Spar tallied the other goal.

Bulldog freshman Grant Preston was credited with the shutout and made 15 saves in goal.

Receives diabetes educators award

ONU pharmacy faculty member, Michael Rush

Ohio Northern University faculty member Michael Rush has been recognized for his efforts in providing high-quality health care to rural residents of the surrounding region.

Rush received the American Association of Diabetes Educators 2019 Strategic Initiative Award during the association’s recent meeting in Houston.

Rush is director of ONU HealthWise and pharmacy residency programs, as well as assistant professor of pharmacy practice in the Raabe College of Pharmacy.

Historical society holds cemetery tour committee meeting

The Ada Historical Society will hold a cemetery tour committee meeting on Tuesday Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the Ada Public Library, 320 N. Main Street, Ada.

ADA - Visiting New Bremen scored touchdowns on six of its eight first half possessions, and rolled to a 51-21 win at Ada in the non-conference season opener Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-1 play with the loss, while NB improved to 1-0 after winning the first meeting between the two schools.

"They dominated us up front, it is no secret that was the story of the game," said Bulldog second-year head coach Shawn Christopher. "With the two turnovers and a (near) pick six, it got away from us quickly.

"Without those plays it is still a game at halftime instead of 41-7," he added.

Bulldog runners compete at Grove Invite

COLUMBUS GROVE - The Ada cross country squad competed at the Columbus Grove Invitational Saturday morning.

The Bulldogs finished 20th in the 24-team small school division meet. Host CG won the boys event with 76 points. Botkins nosed out Minster for second place, 97-98.

Ada scored 571 points to finish ahead of Leipsic, Spencerville, North Central and Miller City, who did not have enough runners finish (five) to field a team score.

Noah Fisher of Defiance Ayersville won the race in 15:38.4. A total of 148 runners competed in the boys small school division race.

DOLA - The Ada volleyball team swept a triangular match at Hardin Northern Saturday morning.

The Lady Bulldogs swept both HN and Arlington to improve to 4-3.    
Ada beat Northern 25-23, 25-23 and took down the Red Devils 25-23, 25-19.

"We have not beaten Arlington in a couple of years so that was a good win," said Bulldog second-year head coach Kyleigh Tabor. "Also (it was good), since Arlington is who we lost to in districts kast year."

Against Arlington, junior middle Megan Light led the Bulldogs with 11 kills, 13 digs and three blocks.
