Bulldog Katayama wins two at Wildcat swim meet

NAPOLEON - Ada's Klava Katayama recorded two individual wins to pace the Bulldog swim teams at the 17-team Wildcat Invitational in Napoleon Saturday.

Ada junior Katayama won the 200 individual medley race. She also took first in the 100 butterfly. Katayama won the 200 freestyle event last year at Napoleon.

The Lady Bullogs finished eighth out of 16 teams, and the Bulldogs boys came in 12th out of 17 squads.

Napoleon won the girls team title with 530 points, with Lima Shawnee and Ottawa-Glandorf tied for second.

Shawnee nosed out Napoleon by 10.5 points to win the boys team title.

Bulldog grapplers 10th at Lancer Invite; Cameron 3rd

MIDDLE POINT - The Ada varsity wrestling team finished 10th out of 11 teams at the annual Lancer Invitational meet at Lincolnview Saturday.

Bulldog freshman Jermey Cameron finished fourth at the 113 lb. division to pace Ada. Ada sophomore Colton Biederman finished fifth in the 120 lb. bracket to post the other top-six placing.

"Jermey Cameron wrestled better than his finish, he was aggressive in every match," said Ada head coach Eric Perkins. "He just made a couple mistakes that put him in some tough spots he couldn’t work out of."

Big Green cagers out-gun Ada boys

ADA - Visiting Ottoville put together a 14-0 fourth quarter spurt to pull away from feisty Ada and defeat the Bulldogs 63-43 in non-league boys basketball action Saturday night.  

Ada fell to 0-4 with their second tough home defeat in as many nights, while Ottoville improved to 2-1 with the win.

"Fatigue played a factor," said Bulldog third-year head coach Dre White. "We made a run to get it down to seven early in the fourth, but then it got away.

"They ran nine or more guys at us. We have to develop more depth and get more scoring."

A runner and a thrower set ONU records

ALLENDALE, Mich. & FINDLAY, Ohio — Senior All-American Ian McVey (Stow/Munroe Falls) and senior thrower Tia Harris (Newton Falls) rewrote the Ohio Northern track and field record books this weekend, headlining the efforts of 10 ONU men's and women's track and field student-athletes who competed at the GVSU Holiday Open and the 2018 Oiler Open on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to kick off the new indoor season.

Capital beats ONU by 26 points

BEXLEY — The Ohio Northern men's basketball team shot just 29.8% from the floor Saturday afternoon, dropping a 79-53 contest at OAC foe at Capital.

The Polar Bears fall to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. Meanwhile, the Crusaders improve to 6-2 and 3-0 in conference play.

Freshman Daniel Unruh (Elida) scored 13 points and added six rebounds to pace the Polar Bear offense. Senior All-American Ryan Bruns contributed 12 points and nine rebounds.

Lady Bulldogs get first win by sinking Commodores

ADA - Host Ada doubled up Perry in the second half to record a 51-37 win in non-league girls basketball action Saturday afternoon.

The purple and gold improved to 1-3 with the hard-earned victory, while the Lady Commodores fell to 0-4 with the loss.

Determined Bulldog sophomore Miranda Wills netted a career-high 21 points despite playing with a mask to protect a broken nose suffered Tuesday.

"It feels really good," said new Ada head coach Morgan Bass when asked how it felt to get her first varsity coaching win. "It was a very good team effort.

ONU defeats Manchester in wrestling

After trailing 12-4 through three weight classes, the Ohio Northern wrestling program won five of the seven remaining bouts Friday evening to knock off NCAA Division III foe Manchester (Ind.) 26-21 for the first dual victory in the 2018-19 campaign.

 

With the win, the Polar Bears improve to 1-2 overall on the season. Meanwhile, the Spartans drop to 1-6.

ONU women vs. Capital at home

The Ohio Northern women's basketball program welcomes in OAC foe Capital Saturday afternoon to round out their pre-Christmas home slate for the 2018-19 campaign. Tipoff is set for 3 pm at the ONU  Sports a enter. The Polar Bears enter the contest with a 6-1 record and 1-1 mark in the OAC. Northern is fresh off a 75-67 victory over the Wilmington Quakers on Wednesday.

Kalida wears down feisty Bulldog boys

ADA - Rock-solid Kalida methodically wore down the Ada boys basketball team to spoil the Bulldog home opener 56-41 in a hard-fought non-league battle Friday night.  

The Bulldogs fell to 0-3 with the defeat, while visiting Kalida improved to 1-1 with the win.

"Give credit to Kalida, they have a good program but I am extremely proud of our guys," said Ada head coach Dre White. "We kept it close and had chances to make it even closer; we just need to convert better on our opportunities.

Concert at Freed Center on Sunday

The Ohio Northern University Symphony and Wind Orchestra will present a concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9 in the Freed Center.

The program will begin with the ONU Wind Orchestra, conducted by Antoine Clark, paying homage to the ceremonial kindling of light during the holidays and the winter solstice. 

After intermission, Music Director Travis Jürgens will conduct the Ohio Northern Symphony in a program titled “Tragedy and Triumph.”

Tickets will be available at the door.
