New instruments join the Ada band - boomwhackers

By Monty Siekerman
High school commencements are rather formal affairs, mostly scripted the same from town to town, but this year's Ada High School graduation ceremony added a new feature, which was creative and fun: boomwhackers.

Nine senior band members, along with Band Director Johnathan Lischak, played a John Williams medley using colorful plastic "instruments," called boomwhackers. Even a flautist joined in during portions of the piece.

Fewer bumps in the road on the way

Here's the summer street repair program

By Monty Siekerman
For Ada travelers, there will be fewer bumps in the road (if only life were that way).

Bluffton Paving Company will set up shop on Wednesday to pave several streets. Four areas of roadway will be milled, then repaved.

There will be no parking posted from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the soon-to-be improved streets. The work will be accomplished in only three days, weather permitting.

June and July in Ada!

Why leave town with all these events planned

Ada doesn't take a vacation in June or July.

There are many events on the Hometown Happenings Icon calendar in the next 61 days.

The events range from Vacation Bible Schools, summer reading activities at the library, Fireside Friday's at The Inn at ONU and an Ada High School alumni banquet.

Darlene Bowers creates Hometown Happenings. The calendar is printer friendly and ready to be posted on your refrigerator or bulletin board.

Please open the attachment at the bottom of this story to discover Ada's June and July activities.

GOT A HMI

This can only mean that there's a Hemi engine under the hood. The Icon spotted this plate in a Bluffton University parking lot on a dark blue Dodge Magnum RT.

Icon dog of the week - Sweetie

The Icon dog of the week is Sweetie, She is a 4 month old female chihuahua mix. She weighs about 5 pounds. Sweetie is looking for her forever home.

To give a dog a forever home, contact the Hardin County dog shelter. It is located at 49 Jones Road on the west side of Kenton.

Hours: 9 am to 4 pm on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Phone: 419-674-2209.

Generally, about 20 to 25 dogs are available for viewing.

The shelter is also the place to contact for giving up a dog, if you find a lost or stray dog, or if you come in contact with a vicious dog. It costs $20 to surrender a dog, which pays for deworming and immunizations for when it is rescued.

A day for remembering

Memorial Day 2017 in Ada

By Monty Siekerman
They served, some never to return, in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, the jungles of Southeast Asia, the countryside, villages and cities of Europe, and many other places.

The men and women of the armed forces of the United States of America were remembered and honored on this Memorial Day at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ada.

Numerous flags fluttered in the breeze under a bright, shiny sky during the service co-sponsored by the Foss-Agin-Meyer Post 185 of the American Legion and Ream-McElroy Post 9381 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Movin' mulch

Lions Club members loaded truck after truck of mulch Saturday morning for those who stopped by with their own trucks and trailers and for delivery to those who ordered mulch by phone.

The Lions, who usually end their sale around Memorial Day, will continue selling it in June since many May Saturdays were rainy.
