Come on in - the water's fine! - Delta Sigma Phi raises money for Red Cross

Ohio Northern University's Delta Sigma Phi fraternity sponsored the 4th annual Polar Plunge at the Fraternity Circle pond on Saturday with the goal of raising $3,000 to benefit the American Red Cross.

Fraternity brothers, as well as students from across campus, took the plunge after eight inches of ice was cut away with a chainsaw.

Ada Liberty EMS stood by, just in case. "Plungers" ran to a tent after a quick dip to sit by a heater before heading home.

Pettit Law Kormendy Lecture rescheduled for April 27

Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law will present the 2015 Kormendy Lecture in the Large Moot Court Room on Monday, April 27, at 12:30 p.m. The program will feature a presentation on “Justifying Regulatory Takings” by Joseph William Singer, Bussey professor of law at Harvard Law School.
Due to weather conditions, this lecture, scheduled for Feb. 16, has been rescheduled for April 27

University Wind Orchestra to feature wind and percussion music

The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents the Ohio Northern University Wind Orchestra, featuring the best of wind and percussion music, in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m.

The program includes Johann DeMeij’s Lord of the Rings Symphony and works by Aaron Copland, Gordon Jacob, and Philip Sparkes. Members of the ONU Dance Company will collaborate with the ONU Wind Symphony for the performance of “Dance Movement” by Sparkes, choreographed by Elizabeth Cozad, lecturer in the ONU theatre department. The ONU Wind Symphony is under the direction of Thomas A. Hunt.

Hardin lamb banquet March 7 - tickets now available

Hardin County - The Hardin County Sheep Improvement Association will hold their annual Lamb Banquet on Saturday, March 7 at St. John’s United Church of Christ at 6:30 pm.  Tickets for the banquet can be obtained from the Extension office at 1021 W. Lima Street, Suite 103, Kenton.  Adult tickets are $15, Children $7, and 2014 Hardin County Junior Fair Sheep Exhibitors free with a reservation given at 419-674-2297 by March 2nd.

Melissa Eddings juror for this year’s Kewpee art show

ArtSpace/Lima, downtown Lima, will host the 27th Annual Kewpee High School Art Invitational from Feb. 27 to April 11. The exhibition, which will feature cash awards, includes works in various categories, including sculpture, photography, painting, digital media, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, jewelry, and drawing.

The Kewpee Exhibit is sponsored by Kewpee Restaurants of Lima, Ohio.

Artists from 21 area high schools including Ada will be exhibiting their work.  A total of 104 pieces will be in the exhibit.

Jurors for the exhibit are Gregg Luginbuhl, Bluffton University, and Melissa Eddings, Ohio Northern University.

Art Krummrey was a McGuffey High School graduate

Arthur “Art” Krummrey, 92, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at 6:45 a.m. at Lima Memorial Health System, Lima, Ohio.

He was born on Nov. 26, 1922 in, St. Marys, Ohio, to Alfred and LaVon (Jory) Krummrey who preceded him, in death. On Dec. 18, 1942, he married Elizabeth Anna Gullett at the Church of Christ parsonage in Greenup, Ky., and she survives in Ada.

He was a member of Quickstep Pentecostal Church of God and a charter member of the Solid Rock Church of God, Sidney, Ohio.

Konner Baker - a Bulldog turned Polar Bear is now ONU's leading scorer

Ada High School grad Konnor Baker is currently the leading scorer for the Ohio Northern men’s basketball team this season, averaging 11.0 points per game.

Konnor, a sophomore education major, is the son of Kent and Kathy Baker. He graduated from Ada high School in 2013 and was a member of the school’s basketball program.

After spending his freshman season at the University of Findlay, Baker returned to Ada to play for the Polar Bears.

One of the most beautiful indoor spaces on the ONU campus is the lounge area at the entrance to the Mathile Center. The gathering/reading area includes two large panel "waterfalls," tropical plants, and eye-catching mobiles. (Monty Siekerman)

Free tax preparation assistance available

ONU Professor Dr. Dexter Woods confers with one of his students, Patrick Jeffries, about a client's tax information. Dr. Woods coordinates a program that offers free tax preparation for those with low to moderate income.
