Add the 101st Farmers' and Merchants' Picnic to your August calendar

Here's a quick glance at the upcoming 101st annual Ada Farmers' and Merchants Picnic.

The event is Friday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 9, at War Memorial Park, Ada.

Friday evening, will be the brush truck and tractor pulls, and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. is the OSTPA Truck and Tractor Pulls.

Three concerts will be held at Party in the Back 40 with Nashville Crush on Friday night at 8:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. is Somebody's Kids and at 7:30 p.m. is The Hypnotix.

Saturday is OWHA Horse Show, parade, greased pig contest, live entertainments, kiddie tractor pull, chain saw carving and much more.

The story behind the man depicted in the statue on the ONU campus

Located between the Dicke building of business and the Hill building, home to the social sciences, stands the statue of a man who founded Ohio Northern University and who helped to develop the town of Ada.

It is Dr. Henry Solomon Lehr.

The statue shows Lehr pondering, standing at the head of campus and facing the town. His nature and location epitomize Lehr’s nature as a progressive academic, interested in the needs of students.

Aug. 4 Hardin crop walk focus on fruit and veggie production

What is that bug in my vegetable garden?  Why do my plants have brown spots on the leaves?  Why are my tomatoes cracking after they looked good? 

Hardin County OSU Extension is sponsoring a Crop Walk program on Monday, Aug. 4, from 6-8:30 pm. The program will include an emphasis on fruit and vegetable production. The location of the program will be 15237 County Road 209, Kenton.

OSU Extension Horticulturist Brad Bergefurd will be giving recommendations on plant nutrition and soil fertility. Dr. Sally Miller, plant pathologist from the OSU Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, will be discussing plant disease problems common with fruits and vegetables.

Roger Worthington 1934-2014

Roger Lee Worthington, 79, died on Friday, July 18, 2014, at 6:40 a.m. at Hardin Hills Health Center, Kenton.

He was born on Dec. 13, 1934, in Lima, Ohio to Edward J. and Anna Margaret (Campbell) Worthington and they preceded him in death.

He was retired from Pete Adams Cannery. He was a former member of the Central United Methodist Church of Alger.

Surviving are two brothers: Bailey (Maxine) Worthington of Waynesfield and Titus Worthington of West Jefferson; and a sister, Clara (Donald) Klutts of Clearwater, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Registrations now accepted for Ada Civic Engagement Day in August

Ohio Northern University is currently registering organizations, businesses, and residents for its third annual Ada Civic Engagement (ACE) Day to be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon.

A partnership with the village of Ada, the ACE Day program provides opportunities for ONU’s first-year students to not only engage with the community but also contribute to the village’s beautification.

Tickets on sale for annual Music Boosters chicken barbecue

Ada Music Boosters Annual Chicken BBQ August 29th

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Ada Music Boosters chicken barbecue, always held behind the stadium the evening of the first home football game of the year. This year the Chicken Barbecue will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, before the Bulldogs host USV.

The annual event is a major fund-raiser for the Ada Music Boosters. Proceeds benefit numerous projects for Ada’s instrumental and vocal music programs. Tickets are being sold now through August 22nd. Contact any band or choir member to purchase tickets, or call Dave Smittle at 419-230-8147.

What have you been up to since your graduation from Ada High School?
I am studying pharmacy at Ohio Northern University and run track and cross country here.

What is it about pharmacy and Spanish that you like? What drew you to those areas of study?
I guess I always knew I wanted to do something in the health field, and somehow pharmacy just seemed to be the perfect fit for me. With my brother and sister both studying pharmacy and my mom a nurse, it was always something in the back of my mind.

Two incoming Ohio Northern University freshmen named the first Baker Scholars

Incoming Ohio Northern University freshmen Ashley Mast from Apple Creek, Ohio, and Teresa Duffy from Wilmington, Ohio, have been named the first Baker Scholars. The scholarship will provide $20,000 for each student over four years.

The two students are the first individuals to benefit from the Dr. Kendall L. Baker, President Emeritus, Ohio Northern University, and Mrs. Toby Baker Endowed Scholarship, which was established to assist students with financial need, academic ability and a strong commitment to leadership and service.
