Bulldog baseball earns 1st win

ADA __ The Ada baseball team scored six first-inning runs and went on to earn a 14-1 win over visiting Vanlue and post their first win of the season on Friday, May 3.

The Bulldogs improved to 1-11 with the convincing victory. Vanlue fell to 1-13 after the loss.

“The kids played a complete game,” said Ada second-year head coach Toby Smith. “We had good pitching, hitting and defense. It was a good team win.”

The Bulldogs followed up their six-run first with five runs in the third frame. They tacked on three more runs in the fourth and after shutting out Vanlue in the top of the fifth, invoked the 10-run mercy rule.

Freshman pitcher Brody Rister hurled four innings of two-hit baseball to earn the win. He struck out five and walked four, and allowed no earned runs. Vanlue scored its lone run in the second inning.

Sophomore Mason Wibley pitched the fifth inning and struck out two.

First baseman Max Puerto smacked two doubles, scored twice and drove in three runs to help pace the Bulldog offense.

Center fielder Kaine Fisher hit a double, singled and scored three runs. He also drove in a run and stole three bases from the leadoff spot.

Shortstop Levi Green singled twice, scored two runs and drove in a pair of runs. Wibley smacked a double, singled, scored a run and had one RBI. 

Rister added a single and a run. Third baseman Blake Zoladz scored a run, drove in one and walked. He also stole two bases.

Second baseman Wes Mowery scored twice and swiped two bags. Right fielder Ethan Lawrence scored two runs and stole three bases.

Ada out-hit Vanlue, 9-2. The Wildcats made four errors, while Ada committed three miscues. The Bulldogs stole a season-high 15 bases.

The Bulldogs visit Temple Christian (1-11) Monday, and play at Waynesfield (7-8) in a makeup game next Tuesday.
