Bulldog grappler Sumner 2nd at sectional; two Bulldogs advance to district

LIMA - Ada senior Chase Sumner took second in the 145 lbs. bracket to pace the Bulldog matmen at the Div. III Lima sectionals hosted by LCC Friday and Saturday.

 

Sumner clinched his fourth straight district tournament berth with his showing. After a bye, Sumner pinned Kyle Martin of Cory-Rawson in the quarterfinals Friday at 1:50.

 

On Saturday, he pinned Brent Siefker of Ottawa-Glandorf at 1:12 in the semifinals.

 

But in the finals, LCC's Joey Caprella registered a 12-3 decision over Sumner to win the bracket title. Sumner now advances to the district competition at Troy next weekend.

 

Ada senior Kade Cortez finished fourth in the 132 lbs. division to also qualify for districts.

 

Cortez lost by pin to Spencerville's Jay Goetz in the quarterfinals of the 132 lbs. bracket. After a bye, Cortez then pinned Bluffton's Trent Pearson in 2:53 to advance to the consolation bracket semis Saturday.

 

Once there Cortez pinned Brendan Etzkorn of Parkway at 3:33 to move on to the third-place match. Justin Sigler of Coldwater pinned Cortez to relegate the Bulldog to fourth place. A top four finish in any bracket advances wrestlers to district.

 

Ada finished 10th out of 15 teams at the Div. III sectionals

with 63 points. Coldwater won the team title with 204.5 points, followed by Ottawa-Glandorf in second with 187. Allen East took third with 146 points.

 

Four Bulldogs lost in the fifth-place match. Ada senior Erryk Katayama finished sixth in the sectional competition at 195 lbs.

 

Katayama pinned Matt Wiechart of Delphos Jefferson Friday in 29 seconds to advance to the semifinals. But then Deandre Nassar of Bluffton pinned Katayama at 1:08.

 

In the consolation semifinals, Katayama was edged 10-9 by Drew Waite of Coldwater. Brandon Dues of Spencerville then pinned Katayama in the fifth-place match to end his season.

 

Ada senior Adam Bailey was pinned by Allen East's Brennan Davies at 1:37 in the heavyweight/285. division Friday. Bailey bounced back on Saturday to pin Jayden Moore of Delphos Jefferson at 3:30 to advance to the consolation semis.

 

Bailey lost by pin to Brandon O'Dell of Spencerville to fall into the fifth-place match. Lincolnview's David Parsons pinned him at 4:03 as Bailey ended up in sixth.

 

Bulldog junior Carson Hissong lost by pin to Seth Obringer of Coldwater at 3:35 in the 160 lbs. bracket Friday. Hissong battled his way through the consolation brackets with a pin at 4:55 of Allen East's Caleb Welch before a 9-6 defeat to Delphos St. John's Mark Wrasman sent him into the fifth-place match.

 

Hissong then came in sixth after he lost to Ezra Jones of Columbus Grove, 5-2.

 

Bulldog freshman Colton Biederman was pinned by Tristen McKee of Parkway in the quarters, then advanced through two consolation rounds via bye. He was pinned by Bluffton's Jeremy Sturgeon in the consolation semis.

 

In the fifth-place match, Biederman was then pinned by Nick Kline of Coldwater to finish sixth.

 

Ada senior Xander White lost in the first round at the 182 lbs. class by pin to Louis Ulrey of Lincolnview. He then was pinned by Enoch Jones of Columbus Grove in the next consolation round.

 

After a bye, Ada junior Tyler Onions lost in the quarters at 170 lbs. by pin to Hunter Showalter of Wayne Trace. Onions then lost a 7-1 decision in the ensuing consolation round to Ryan Bogart of Grove.

 

Ada sophomore Reece Evans was pinned at 4:34 by Cooper Chung of Delphos Jefferson in the quarters. Evans then lost by pin to Peter Ankerman of Delphos St. John's in the consolation round.
