Roland Roll was retired after 32 years on the ONU faculty

Ronald Elwood Roll, 85, died on Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at 6:25 p.m. at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.

He was born on Aug. 10, 1931, in Mansfield to Elwood Gon and Hazel Marie (Hoffman) Roll, who preceded him in death.  On July 12, 1980, Ronald married Janet Dale Blair and she survives in Ada.

Ronald retired after 32 years as a professor of Physics at Ohio Northern University. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in physics from Ohio State University and did further graduate work in Astronomy. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ada.  Ronald was a U.S. Air Force Veteran serving from 1950-1954 in Alaska during the Korean War.   

Ronald is also survived by a son, James (Fiancé, Nicole Marleau) Roll of Bowling Green; special children, Hunter, Connor, and Matthew Marleau; one sister, Jean Bittinger of Mansfield; two nephews, Greg Bittinger of Shelby and Reed (Beth) Bittinger of Raleigh, N.C.; one niece, Lynn (Bill) Kroah of Gaithersburg, Md.; and his three ONU Physics colleagues of over 30 years, David Weimer, Frank Gangemi, and Rex Messick.

Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, with Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel and Rev. Mercy Lineberry officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, in Iberia Cemetery, Iberia, Ohio, with graveside military services conducted by the Mt. Gilead VFW Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada, and one hour prior to the service on Friday, Aug. 26, from noon-1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Ada, and/or the Physics Department at Ohio Northern University.
