ONU sports round up

Here’s the Ohio Northern University sports round up from the past week.

Women’s swim team
The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team started off its dual meet season with a victory. The Polar Bears defeated Wilmington 138-122 Friday night.

The 200-meter medley relay team — of Shelby Starkey, Abby Schauer, Kyley Stuart and Gabrielle Grant — got things started, claiming first with a time of 2:11.90.

Schauer won the 100-meter breaststroke, as well, boasting a time of 1:20.21. Stuart touched first in the 100-meter butterfly, clocking in at 1:13.37, and Grant took first in the 50-meter freestyle, registering a time of 29.76.

Deisler, Paulding Panthers run past Bulldogs

Ada QB Hull leads the NWC in passing yardage (1,937)

ADA - The injury-riddled Ada football team lost another shootout to visiting Paulding 70-40 in Northwest Conference action on a chilly night last Friday at War Memorial Stadium.

The teams combined for over 1,100 yards in offense and 110 points in the wild contest. Ada junior quarterback Brandon Hull accounted for six touchdowns and close to 400 yards in offense, but it was not enough to offset a career game by Panther senior running back Jacob Deisler.

Deisler totaled a whopping 362 rushing yards and five touchdowns as Paulding ran by Ada for 525 yards. Deisler surpassed the 1,100-yard mark on the season with his huge game.

First-ever Bear to rush for 1,000 yards in three different seasons

ONU's All-American Christiaan Williams...and he's only a junior

Junior All-American Christiaan Williams (Sidney/Anna) became the first Ohio Northern player to run for 1,000 yards in three different seasons, leading the Polar Bears to a 49-0 football victory over Capital on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

Ohio Northern improves to 4-3 overall and is 4-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Capital falls to 0-7, 0-6.

Williams carried the ball 25 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns, giving him a league-leading 1,018 yards in seven games this season.

ONU women unbeaten in OAC

The No. 21-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team improved to 6-0-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference action after defeating Heidelberg 3-1 at Kerscher Stadium on Tuesday night.

ONU (12-2-2 overall, 6-0-0 OAC) won its eighth consecutive match.

Junior Abigail Mathews (Liberty Township/Lakota East) provided the match's first goal in the 15th minute on a blast from 22 yards out. Senior Rose Nienaber (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) earned the corner and an assist in the sequence.

ONU wrestlers picked to finish 5th in OAC

The Ohio Northern wrestling team was picked to finish fifth in the 2019-20 Ohio Athletic Conference Coaches poll in voting conducted by the league's eight head coaches.

The Polar Bears, under 32nd-year head coach Ron Beaschler, received 24 points in the poll.

Mount Union was picked to finish first with 49 points and seven first place votes, Baldwin Wallace was picked second with 42 points and John Carroll was third with 38 points and one first place vote.

ONU returns seven starters and 11 lettermen from last year's squad that went 6-9 overall and was 1-5 in the OAC.

Ohio Northern will open its 2019-20 campaign on Nov. 9 at the Mount Union Invitational.

HS track season will begin Feb. 24

Track and field practice in 2020 will begin earlier than in previous seasons.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association this week announced by an 8-0 vote, its board approved a proposal from the Ohio Association of Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches to move the start date for track and field practice for the 2020 season to Feb. 24, 2020.

That date coincides with the practice start date of softball, baseball and lacrosse.
