Ada schools and community focus on bus safety October 16-20

Ada Exempted Village Schools and the surrounding community recognize National School Bus Safety Week, October 16-20. The national theme this year is BEEP! BEEP! School bus safety starts with me.

More than 800,000 Ohio students ride on school buses each day, and nearly 15,000 bus drivers, mechanics, secretaries and supervisors statewide are dedicated to providing safe transportation for Ohio children.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tells us that students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a school bus instead of traveling by car.

This year's national campaign is focused on reminding us that safety starts with me and the importance of motorists in keeping our students safe. Ohio law requires motorists to stop clear of the school bus until the bus driver cancels the red lights and the bus begins to move.

By Paula Scott

Four lucky ticket holders won prizes in the 2023 Ada Lions Club raffle drawing on October 11. All 4,500 tickets were sold with the lure of the big first place prize: two tickets to the October 21 Ohio State vs. Penn State football game and an overnight stay at a Columbus area Choice hotel.

Purchasers were also tempted by the second prize: an OSU bench crafted by Allen County Fabrication, third prize of $100 cash and fourth prize of $50.00 cash.

Lion Jill Simmons did the honors of drawing the winning tickets with these results:

1st place) Lion Mike Lenhart

2nd place) Brett Rogers

3rd place) Jerry Hawk

4th place) Matt Hughes

Raffle co-chairman Ted Prueter thanked everyone who sold tickets and announced that the proceeds would be divided equally between the Lions scholarship and the Charles “Bud” Hawkins Memorial Scholarship; each will receive approximately $1800.

Board of Zoning Appeals meeting announcement

The Village of Ada will hold a Board of Zoning Appeals meeting at 5:00 p.m. on October 23, 2023, at the Ada Depot to hear an appeal of a denial to erect a 6’ Privacy Fence within a Front Yard at the northeast corner of S. Johnson and E. High, specifically 722 S. Johnson.

The request is to replace a current 4’ chain link fence with a 6’ privacy fence. The new fence would be repositioned to the southwest corner of the current garage, proceeding westward towards the house.

This request has been denied as the Ada Village Code does not allow a 6’ fence to be erected within a front yard. In this case, the applicant has two front yards since she lives on a corner lot.
